Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:

I believe that unbundled legal services allow individuals to represent themselves in mediation or court for a reasonable cost. To that end, I try to be flexible and provide a solution that works for the client's budget, while providing the service or services that are most directly at the heart of the issue.

Mediation: I have not had family mediation training. I do not practice as a mediator but I have acted as counsel in 5 or fewer family mediations in the last five years.

Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:

In situations involving significant power imbalances I would not recommend that a party attend a mediation without the assistance of representation. In those instances, I would suggest to clients that they retain the services of a lawyer for the mediation itself. However, in appropriate circumstances, clients can be prepared for a mediation that they intend to attend themselves. In that circumstance, a discussion of priorities, including providing the client with relevant basic legal knowledge, can allow a client to understand what is and is not an appropriate deal to make. Armed with an understanding of their rights and a mediation plan, the client can appropriately decide how to defend their interests, and when to yield.

Cultural Diversity Experience:

I began working in the areas of Child and Family Services, Family Law, and Criminal Law, which brought me into contact with a number of different cultural backgrounds. Specifically, I have represented a number of aboriginal communities and individuals, including as part of legal teams providing advice respecting Aboriginal Title, and as counsel for the Director of Child Youth and Family Enhancement (Alberta) in Metis communities. I have also assisted individuals from diverse backgrounds in family and criminal law.
