Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:
I attempt to work with clients to set boundaries and expectations to ensure that clients understand at the outset what they can reasonably expect from an unbundled retainer and then shoot to beat those expectations. Unbundling can work if carefully managed but without due care it can be as expensive as an open conventional retainer.
Mediation: I have taken family mediation training but do not practice as a mediator. I have acted as counsel in 16-20 family mediations in the last 5 years.
Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:
I work hard to prepare myself and my clients by carefully analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the case, setting an initial starting position, plotting anticipated movements of that position and setting an anticipated walk-away point. All the while, I advise my clients that the goal-posts can move in the course of a mediation, and often do and advise clients to be prepared to adjust their position accordingly. I also advise my clients to take a firm but reasonable approach moving into a mediation.
Cultural Diversity Experience:
I have cultural sensitivity training for first nations peoples dealing with reconciliation which I have received through the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C. and the Canadian Bar Association.
