Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services

I am of the opinion that people should be well equipped to make whatever decisions, including process decisions, that suit their dispute. I practice exclusively in the area of family law and have concentrated on out of court settlements for almost 15 years. I act in a variety of ways for clients: initial consultations, on going education, strategy sessions (specializing in conflict resolution strategies), as back ground consultant or as the professional producing the paperwork. I also am an active collaborative lawyer and family law mediator.

Mediation

  • Has family mediation training

  • Does not act as counsel

  • Acted as mediator in more than 30 mediations in the last 5 years

Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation

I provide clients process information prior to mediation (education about their legal rights and responsibilities, documents needed, issues to be addressed, how various legal issues interact with each other - this is also known as independent legal advice), as well as on going support doing the mediation process (answering questions, helping think through strategy, educating about conflict resolution). I also "paper the deal" - draw up the separation agreement based on the decisions that have been made in mediation. If desired, I can be available by phone during the time of mediation. I can also attend mediation with the client. Usually I'm the mediator - that's why I don't normally act as counsel in mediations.

Cultural Diversity Experience

I have mediated with and acted on behalf of clients from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures. My Mediate BC profile gives more information about this question.
