Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:

My approach is to try to help litigants have access to the resources, including the representation, that they need and want. Some litigants are unable to afford a lawyer throughout their legal matter, but this shouldn't prevent them from getting some needed assistance during the process. Others feel confident in remaining self-represented litigants, but want the expertise, insight, and resources that lawyers have, and those litigants should be able to represent themselves the way that they so choose.

Mediation: I do not have family mediation training. I have acted as counsel in 6 – 10 mediations in the last 5 years.

Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:

In acting as counsel at mediation, my role is to support and advocate for my client. It is also my role to provide legal advice, including likely possible outcomes on the outstanding issues. Most clients come into the mediation with the hope of settling some or all of the outstanding issues. In supporting my client, I also try to explore, with the client, mediator, and opposing counsel, different solutions for each issue so that the likelihood of success of mediation is increased. It is also my role to explain the process and each step as it goes so that if there is an agreement at the end of the day, the client understands the agreement and its consequences.

Cultural Diversity Experience:

I have represented clients of many different cultures, races, genders, sexual orientation, education levels, and socio-economic backgrounds. It adds an important layer to a file to be cognizant of in negotiating each issue. For some clients, their background and experiences can have a big impact on the negotiation and settlement and for others, less so. It's important to have a continuing dialogue about these issues. My own background is that my parents are first generation immigrants from Hong Kong. I speak Cantonese, but not to the extent that I would feel comfortable to say that I offer services in Cantonese.
