Haidt's TED Talk, How Screens Stole Childhood—and How to Get It Back, extends these questions into the school day. After examining the developmental effects of smartphones and social media, Haidt turns to educational technology and asks what role devices should play in children's education, including whether 1:1 (one device per student) computing belongs in elementary schools. That question is particularly relevant in Wellesley, where students receive individual school-issued devices beginning in kindergarten. If some technology boundaries can benefit children, how should we think about the technology they use for learning?
WPS technology policies were last updated in 2020. Since then, COVID-19 and the recent AI revolution have completely upended how our society uses technology. This summer, the Wellesley School Committee adopted a three-year timeline for reviewing and updating district policies, following the 2023 guidance from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC).
Now is the time to advocate for new tech use policies that best support a child’s development and their needs.
