Special Election Confirmed
The Santa Clara County Office of Education officially validated our petition on 10/11/2019, Friday and confirmed the Milpitas School Board special election in March 2020. This is a win for our children, our community, and our local democracy. We all deserve a legitimate process to appoint new School Board members. This special election will help us achieve this by giving everyone a chance in all fairness and away from backroom politics. Congratulations and thank you to all of you who signed or supported our petition. You made this possible. Thank you for being a champion for Milpitas.
A quick recap: In August, MUSD had a meeting to fill a vacancy on the board. The candidate who came on top in the interview, both in grade and in votes by the board members, was not appointed. It turned out that the superintendent had shared erroneous information about the candidates’ standing. During the review of the candidates, she also inserted herself in the decision-making process of the board. That intrusion of the superintendent and the false information she shared jeopardized the fairness of the process. The appointment process had lost complete credibility and legitimacy in the eyes of most Milpitans. In less than two weeks, hundreds of registered voters decided to sign a petition calling for a special election in order to fix what had been broken with an open vote where everyone would have a chance. The petition was filed on September 11th. Today, 30 days after the petition submission, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters completed the verification of all signatures. The special election is on.
This special election is open to everyone. It will be a chance for all to express themselves and select the best candidate for the school board. It is a chance to break away from the special interests and backroom alliances that have been locking up and corrupting such appointments in Milpitas. Thank you for your support as we work together to make Milpitas a better place for our families, for our friends, and for our diverse communities!
