If you want a reliable tool to flush saltwater from your engine after a day of car washing, choose Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs; if you need a direct replacement part to restore the lighting system on your 9.9HP to 15HP outboard, choose AstraLoom Boat Motor Lighting. These two items serve completely different purposes on the water, and confusing them would be a costly mistake. One is a maintenance accessory designed to protect your engine's longevity, while the other is a critical electrical component that keeps your navigation lights functioning when the sun goes down. I have analyzed the specifications and design intent for both products to help you decide which one actually belongs in your boat's tackle box today.
• Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs: Built with a flexible U-channel and wide rectangular seal to create a watertight connection for flushing; its trade-off is it only works with engines that have accessible intake openings, not those with internal cooling systems. This pick is for boaters who run frequently in saltwater and want to prevent corrosion.
• AstraLoom Boat Motor Lighting: Constructed from high-grade aluminum alloy to replace a specific OE lighting coil for 9.9HP through 15HP motors; its trade-off is extremely narrow compatibility that requires exact model verification before purchase. This pick is for owners of older or specific outboard models whose navigation lights have failed.
• The Decision: If your goal is general engine care and extending the life of your motor, the muffs are the essential daily driver. If your goal is fixing a specific electrical failure on a small outboard, the lighting coil is the only solution.
This product is engineered as a practical solution for the most common threat to outboard engines: saltwater intrusion. When you use your boat in coastal waters, salt residue settles inside the cooling passages, leading to corrosion that can eat away at internal components over time. The Better Boat muffs address this by creating a seal around the engine's water intake, allowing you to connect a standard garden hose and circulate fresh water through the system. The design features a durable rubber construction that is specifically shaped to handle the rigors of repeated use.
The standout feature here is the wide rectangular intake seal, measuring 3.25 by 5 inches. This dimension allows the unit to flex and grip wider intake openings effectively, ensuring a watertight connection without leaking. The U-channel measures 9.25 inches deep, which accommodates a vast majority of standard outboard and inboard I/O engines. Whether you own a Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, or Evinrude, the rotating ears and U-channel design adapt to virtually any configuration without requiring tools or permanent modifications. This flexibility makes it a versatile addition to any boater's gear, especially those who switch between different vessels or simply want a universal tool.

I recommend this product for anyone who values preventative maintenance. Flushing your engine takes just minutes after every run, but it saves you from expensive repairs down the road. The kit includes a rubber washer for connecting to any standard garden hose and a quick-connect male adapter for those using quick-connect hose systems. It functions as a standalone flusher or can be integrated into a larger winterizing kit. If you operate in saltwater environments or even brackish water where corrosion is a risk, this simple rubber device is an insurance policy for your engine's lifespan.
In stark contrast to the maintenance utility of the muffs, the AstraLoom unit is a specialized repair part. Its sole purpose is to act as a direct replacement for a failing lighting coil in specific outboard engines. If your navigation lights have stopped working or are flickering intermittently, this coil is likely the culprit. The product is explicitly designed to fit 9.9HP, 13.5HP, and 15HP outboard motors, targeting a specific segment of smaller vessel owners who rely on these powerplants for fishing or short trips.
The engineering focus here is precision and material durability. Crafted from high-grade aluminum alloy, the lighting coil offers exceptional resistance to wear and chemical exposure typical of harsh marine environments. This robust design ensures reliability season after season, provided the part matches your engine's requirements exactly. It serves as an OE replacement for part number 63V 85533 00, meaning it is built to meet or exceed original equipment standards. The manufacturer states that each unit undergoes rigorous testing to ensure top performance, delivering consistent and stable power output for safe operation during all your marine adventures.
However, the strict compatibility requirement is the defining characteristic of this product. You cannot buy this blindly based on horsepower alone; you must verify your specific motor model and cross-check the original equipment part number. The precise engineering guarantees seamless installation only if the match is exact. This product is not for general maintenance or upgrades; it is a targeted fix for a broken component. If your light system has failed and you have confirmed that your motor falls within the 9.9HP to 15HP range and matches the OE number, this is the component you need to get back on the water safely at night.
• Best for Saltwater Protection → Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs, as they actively remove corrosive salts from the engine block.
• Best for Electrical Repair → AstraLoom Boat Motor Lighting, designed specifically to restore power to non-functional navigation lights.
• Best for Universal Fitment → Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs, which adapt to nearly any brand and model without tools.
• Best for Specific Model Replacement → AstraLoom Boat Motor Lighting, offering a direct OE swap for 9.9HP–15HP units with part number 63V 85533 00.
• Best for Preventative Maintenance → Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs, intended for routine flushing after every trip to extend engine life.
• Best for Immediate Fixing → AstraLoom Boat Motor Lighting, solving a specific failure point rather than preventing a future one.
• Best for Versatility → Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs, usable for flushing, cooling, warming, and winterizing across multiple engine types.
• Best for Durability in Marine Environments → Both excel here, but AstraLoom uses aluminum alloy for heat and chemical resistance, while Better Boat uses premium rubber for flexibility and sealing.
For most boat owners, the Better Boat Outboard Motor Muffs offer significantly more value because they provide a proactive way to protect your investment. Engine corrosion is a silent killer that happens slowly over time, and having a reliable tool to flush your system after every outing is a wise habit. The AstraLoom lighting coil is a niche part that is only necessary if you have a specific electrical failure on a compatible motor. Since I am writing this with a focus on long-term boat ownership and safety, I would choose the Better Boat muffs. They are the right choice for car washing scenarios where you want to rinse off the salt immediately, and they apply to almost everyone who owns an outboard. Check the current price on Amazon to see which fits your budget better, but prioritize the muffs for general care.
