I'm looking for an older version of the ATTO drive benchmark that will work in XP. The latest version and some older ones I found on sites claiming XP compatibility - don't actually work in XP. They'll run but after selecting the drive, clicking the button to do the test just makes a beep, it doesn't run the test.

ATTO Disk Benchmark is perhaps one of the oldest benchmarks going and is definitely the main staple for manufacturer performance specifications. ATTO uses RAW (or compressible) data and manufacturers prefer testing in compressible data as this achieves the highest performance results, although not always too realistic.
Benchmarks such as ATTO and CrystalDiskMark help provide a quick look at the performance of the direct-attached storage device. The results translate to the instantaneous performance numbers that consumers can expect for specific workloads, but do not account for changes in behavior when the unit is subject to long-term conditioning and/or thermal throttling. Yet another use of these synthetic benchmarks is the ability to gather information regarding support for specific storage device features that affect performance.
Western Digital claims speeds of up to 1000 MBps for the ArmorLock NVMe SSD and 1050 MBps for the G-DRIVE SSD. ATTO benchmarking is restricted to a single configuration in terms of queue depth, and is only representative of a small sub-set of real-world workloads. Interestingly, at QD4, the ArmorLock SSD hits 1.01GBps for both reads and writes, while the G-DRIVE SSD hits 1GBps+ only for reads. Writes top out at around 985 MBps. ATTO does allow the visualization of change in transfer rates as the I/O size changes, with optimal performance being reached around 512 KB for a queue depth of 4 for both SSDs.
Then there are a few newer SSDs that have poor benchmarks with ATTO or AS SSD compared to other SSDs. But when "real world" benchmark tests are performed on them, they beat the others by a good margin. I use one of these "slow" ones, and compared to my other "fast" ones, it will do a virus scan of my C: drive in 20 seconds, faster than the others. So what is right and what is wrong? Everything.
