ALPHA DELTA KAPPA, BETA CHAPTER MINUTES, SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

President Chris Newton called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone at 4:52 p.m. at Farrell’s Restaurant, Portland. Twelve members were present.

For an opening thought, Chris referred to the children’s book, “14 Cows For America” written by Carmen Agra Deedy. The true story tells about a tribe of Maasai Warriors in western Kenya who gave 14 cows to the American people as a sign of hope and friendship after 9/11. Also, Pat Moura brought some of her beautiful photographs with nature themes to give to each sister as a way of doing something positive on 9/11.

Mary Ann Cannata moved to accept the June 5th minutes, seconded by Sharon Goodwin, and passed.

There was no corresponding secretary’s report.

In Nancy Rogalsky’s absence, Chris read the treasurer’s report: Savings: $174.98, Altruistic: $693.96, Delegates: $6.54, Checking: $394.35. $63.00 was deposited in the Altruistic account. Helen Hill moved to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by Robbie Avery, and passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ALTRUISTIC: Members completed the sheet for service hours, monetary, and other donations and donated food to Amazing Grace.

POLICIES : There was no report.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Chris read the “ABC’s of Alpha Delta Kappa Protocol”. The following will cover future fraternity education topics: October: Karen Mislivets and Robbie Avery, November: Helen Hill, December: Anne Walsh, Pat Moura.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH: Betty Rosano read a list of suggested activities. Chris will assist Betty with an electronic report. Sisters were encouraged to attend the Founders’ Day celebration October 16, Il Monticello Restaurant, Meriden. Payment Is due October 1.

MEMBERSHIP: Notes are being sent to Farm Hill School female teachers inviting them to attend Beta’s 4:15, October 9th meeting in the Farm Hill Library. Sisters are reminded to wear their badges. Welcoming baskets for the Solnit Center will be filled. It is hoped new members can be recruited.

NOMINATING:Members are being asked to assist Chris at monthly meetings.

PUBLICITY: Robbie sent a picture to “Kappan” showing sisters filling Solnit Center baskets. Nothing has shown up, yet. A suggestion was made to send to “Kappan” a picture of sisters attending a meeting at Cromwell Apple Rehab to be with Beta sister, Shirley Brown, when favors were made for the residents.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS Ellie Jurczak reported Beta sisters donated $295 to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Judy’s Team on the Longest Day in June. Mary Ann will contact Cromwell Apple Rehab to make arrangements for the Nov. 13th meeting.

NEW BUSINESS Beta received a certificate for excellent 100% Altruistic reporting. Chris discussed “Smart Goals” and the “Needs Assessment”. Robbie distributed the assessment forms to each member.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA, BETA CHAPTER MINUTES, SEPTEMBER. 12, 2018

President Chris Newton called the meeting to order at 4:45 p.m. at Farrell’s Restaurant,Portland. Twelve members were present.

Chaplain Kathy Lagana read a passage from The World According To Mr. Rogers. A quote from the passage is: “Do what we can with what we have.”

Sharon Goodwin moved to accept the June 13, 2018 minutes as read, seconded by Nancy Rogalsky, and passed.

New Corresponding Secretary Evelyn would like a description of her expected duties.

Treasurer Nancy Rogalsky reported as follows: Savings: $174.98, Altruistic: $316.96, Delegates: $6.54, Checking: $645.35. In July, $54.00 from 50/50 raffles was deposited in the altruistic fund. Also, in July, there was a $25.00 memorial donation.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ALTRUISTIC: Sharon circulated the recording sheet for service hours, monetary and other donations. Donations for Amazing Grace Food Pantry will be collected at the October meeting.

POLICIES: Evelyn had nothing to report.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Ellie Jurczak reported, as a result of the Regional Conference votes during the summer, “Teach Too” is the new altruistic and world understanding project. Alpha Delta Kappa will raise funds for transitional housing for 48 older Haitian teens. At the

Providence Regional Conference, $4,520 was raised for HAAC, an organization for challenged children.

Also, news from International says, “Excellent student teachers, who have graduated/met requirements for certification, and are under contract, will be able to join a local chapter, when invited.”

MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: Robbie Avery encouraged all to look for new candidates and invite them to a meeting.

PUBLICITY: Chris will remind Sue Wesoloski to look for ways to publicize Beta’s activities.

ADK MONTH: Betty Rosano asked sisters to think about special October activities.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Chris reviewed Beta’s Needs Assessment, stating there is still no president-elect.

Beta sisters donated $250 to the Alzheimer’s Association, as a result of the “Longest Day” collection at the June brunch.

NEW BUSINESS

At the September state meeting, State President Joyce McAloon announced she will highlight five chapters at each meeting.

Beta became a “7 Pearl “chapter.

Beta is to bring refreshments to the March 2, 2019 state meeting.

Anne Walsh was given her Alpha Delta Kappa certificate and bookmark.

Robbie will create a Beta website.

Nancy won the 1/3 - 2/3 raffle.

Chris suggested that members try to find a “contact” person at each Middletown school. After discussion, Robbie moved to take money from the treasury to purchase candy and baskets to be given to all Middletown schools during ADK Month. Ellie seconded the motion which passed. The baskets will be placed in the faculty rooms of thirteen schools. After more discussion, Anne Walsh volunteered to buy “Smarties” candies to fill the baskets. Chris will buy the baskets. The candy baskets will be assembled at the October 10th.meeting. An ADK brochure will be attached to each basket. Volunteers will distribute the baskets. Betty asked if the idea needs to go through the school principals. Chris will check on this matter.

Founders’ Day is October 25th at the Gallery in Glastonbury. The altruistic collection of personal care items, paper products, and cleaning products are for TEEG (Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group). Those attending are asked to send their checks for $27.00 to Meredith Barker by October 13th.

Theta chapter will have its annual “Tea” at the Villa Louisa, Bolton, October 28th.

Robbie moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:15 p.m., seconded by Evelyn, and passed.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA, BETA CHAPTER MINUTES, OCTOBER 10, 2018

President Chris Newton called the meeting to order at 4:50 p.m. at the Farm Hill School Library, Middletown. Nine sisters were present.

Chaplain Kathy Lagana sent by way of Pat Moura, a reading from Roald Dahl: “If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

Sharon Goodwin moved to accept the September 12th minutes as read, seconded by Diane Petras, and passed.

Treasurer Nancy Rogalsky sent the following report: Savings: $174.98, Altruistic: $341.96, Delegates: $6.54, Checking: $645.35. $25.00 was deposited from the September raffle. Helen Hill moved to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by Sharon Goodwin, and passed.

Chris will email Evelyn Maher information on the duties of corresponding secretary. State President Joyce McAloon would like Evelyn’s email so she can send messages to Evelyn about sending cards or notes to sisters at various times.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ALTRUISTIC: Sharon circulated the recording sheet for service hours, monetary, and other donations. Items were collected for Amazing Grace Food Pantry.

POLICIES: Evelyn spoke about the most recent manual completed earlier in 2018.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Chris distributed the “Gift of Membership” paper and lead a discussion about gifts, including the gift of time and helping others. Members were encouraged to think of more gifts.

PUBLICITY: There was nothing to report.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH: Betty Rosano asked sisters to record their special activities on the paper she passed around. There is still time to make additional entries at the November meeting.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS Chris gave everyone a new revised Beta membership list and asked that the old list be discarded. There was discussion about doing the Solnit welcoming baskets again. More information is needed about specific requests for this year. Further discussion will take place at the November meeting.

NEW BUSINESS: Chris thanked Anne Walsh and Pat Moura for donating the “Smarty” candy to be used in Beta candy dishes to be delivered to faculty at thirteen Middletown schools in honor of Alpha Delta Kappa Month.

Discussion about a possible donation to “Warm the Children” was tabled until the November meeting. Diane Petras brought Ellie Jurczak a bouquet of Montauk daisies as a thank you for inviting her to join Beta 32 years ago. Diane wanted to give Ellie special recognition during Alpha Delta Kappa Month.

Diane also said she was proud to call Mary Ann Cannata sister for her prayers and support through difficult times.

Mary Ann moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:40 p.m., seconded by Anne Walsh, and passed.

After adjournment, candy dishes for the Middletown faculties were assembled.

Then, Pat Moura and Anne Walsh lead the group in making bookmarks with hardware store paint strips.

President Chris Newton called the meeting to order at 4:34 p.m. at the Farm Hill School Library, Middletown. Ten members were present. Chris welcomed everyone and asked for a moment of silent prayer for ill sisters.

Chaplain Kathy Lagana read a quote from C.S. Lewis: “We’re never too old to set a goal, dream a new dream.”

Betty Rosano moved to accept the October 10th. minutes, seconded by Mary Ann Cannata, and passed.

There was no correspondence.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Helen Hill read Meredith Barker’s November Violet ’s Voice article about “Would You Want to Join Your Chapter?” There was discussion about Beta’s many gifts.

MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: Robbie Avery stated Beta is still looking for a President- Elect. Members were asked to consider the position.

COURTESY: Mary Ann sent birthday cards to Pat Moura and Karen Mislivets. A get well card will be sent to Shirley Brown who fell and is at Apple Rehab, Cromwell.

PUBLICITY: Robbie took pictures for the Beta Website. She will try to send a picture to the Middletown Chronicle, and perhaps, in the future, to Kappan.

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH: Betty asked members to review the recording sheet she circulated in October. Her report will be completed soon.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:

· The needs assessment has been completed. The “Gift of Membership” was discussed.

· When Chris was asked if there had been any response from Middletown teachers concerning the candy baskets sent to each school, she said, “No.”

· Chris will once again remind Farm Hill teachers that Beta sisters are willing to help them, when needed.

· There was discussion about trying to recruit new members. A suggestion was made that perhaps something else can be done for Middletown faculties.

NEW BUSINESS

· At the November 3rd. State meeting, Beta was recognized. There were reports about Kiva, scholarships, and altruism. Robbie told state meeting participants she was proud to call Chris her sister.

· May 1, 2019 is “Fun Day” at the Chowder Pot at a cost of $35.

· July 17-20, 2019 is the International Convention in Minneapolis.

· When American Safe Wash is hired, 10 % is donated to Alpha Delta Kappa.

· State President Joyce McAloon and Immediate Past State President Meredith Barker will attend Beta’s Christmas Party on December 12th. at Farrell’s Restaurant, Portland, at 4:30 p.m.

Mary Ann moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:20 p.m., seconded by Pat Speight, and passed. After the meeting, candy boxes were made for Cromwell Apple Rehab.

Portland. Thirteen members were present. Beta’s two invited guests, State President Joyce McAloon and Immediate Past State President Meredith Barker were welcomed and introduced.

Robbie Avery made the motion to accept the November 14th minutes as read, seconded by Ellie Jurczak, and passed.

Corresponding Secretary Evelyn Maher received a thank you note from St. Jude for the donation Beta sent in memory of her brother.

Treasurer Nancy Rogalsky reported the following: Savings: $174.98, Altruistic: $384.96, Delegates: $6.54, Checking: $611.35. $34.00 was paid for the Connecticut Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship. $43.00 of profits from the 70/30 raffle were deposited into Beta’s Altruistic Fund. Robbie moved to accept the treasurer’s report as presented, seconded by Mary Ann Cannata, and passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH: Betty Rosano submitted her report to the state and gave a copy to Beta’s secretary.

ALTRUISTIC: Sharon Goodwin circulated the recording sheet for service hours, monetary, and other donations. Food for Amazing Grace was collected.

POLICIES: No report.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Chris gave everyone a pair of Christmas socks with this acrostic attached to each pair: “SOCK IT” to 2019: Sisterhood, Organization, Community Service, Kindness, Integrity, Tenacity.

MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: Ellie and Robbie asked members to volunteer for president-elect. It was reported some Farm Hill teachers may be interested in joining Beta. They will be invited to a meeting.

COURTESY: Mary Ann delivered 98 candy boxes to the Cromwell Apple Rehab. She sent get well cards to Shirley Brown who is at Cromwell Apple Rehab and Evelyn Maher.

PUBLICITY: Ellie spoke about a Middletown Press article concerning deceased Beta member

Carol Crayton. The Farm Hill School stage is to be dedicated in her honor.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Nancy moved to donate $90.00 to sponsor one older child for “Warm the Children”. Robbie seconded the motion. After discussion, eleven voted in favor and two were opposed. The motion passed. There was discussion about a needy family of five children at Farm Hill School. Sharon moved to donate $100 for a Stop and Shop gift card, seconded by Robbie, and passed. Joyce and Meredith added to Beta’s donation. There will be further discussion about help for the family at the January meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Chris and Nancy will attend the March state meeting.

The January 9th meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Farm Hill School. Nancy will present a program about Greece. Please park in the lower parking lot.

Chris moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:16 p.m., seconded by Robbie, and passed.

After the meeting, sisters enjoyed dinner and an evening of fellowship.

Corresponding Secretary Evelyn Maher read thank you letters from Amazing Grace expressing gratitude for Beta’s donations throughout 2018.

This is what the balances are showing right now because the December statement isn’t available yet to show the December deposits and check payments. POLICIES: Helen Hill has a hard copy of the March 2018 Beta Policies and Procedures Manual, should anyone need it for reference.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Ellie updated members on Shirley Brown’s condition. She is at Cromwell Apple Rehab and is so grateful for all cards from ADK sisters. Also, Ellie reminded sisters of the International Convention in Minneapolis July 17-20, 2019.

MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: There was nothing to report.

COURTESY: There are no January birthdays. Mary Ann Cannata will send a card for Chris’ February 7th.

PUBLICITY: Chris’ “LET’S SOCK IT TO 2019” and her gift of holiday socks to her sisters was mentioned in the December 2118 Issue of “Violet’s Voice”.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Nancy Rogalsky and Chris will attend the March 2nd State Meeting in Berlin. Anyone wishing to join them is welcome.

NEW BUSINESS

Farm Hill School Staff will have a dress down day in April to raise funds for the Solnit Center welcome baskets. Beta sisters will purchase items for the baskets which will be assembled at the May 8th meeting. Anyone who wishes to purchase items ahead of time may do so. Mary Ann said she would provide 12 tubes of toothpaste and 12 toothbrushes. Other sisters are welcome to purchase appropriate items. Just let Chris know what you are providing.

As Nancy was unavailable to present her “Greece” program at the January meeting, Diane Petras gave an informative talk about the “The Wadsworths and Their Long Hill Mansion”. The Middletown mansion is very historic and Diane serves as a docent there. Nancy will present her program at either the April or May meeting — whatever works for her.

Corresponding Secretary Evelyn Maher read a thank you note from Amazing Grace. Chris said she received a thank you note from one of the families Beta helped in December.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ALTRUISTIC: Sharon Goodwin sent her SNP report online before March 15th. She included the following for Beta: Volunteer hours totaled 1,059, Monetary donations totaled $8,439, and non-monetary gifts totaled a value of $2,844. The recording sheet for service hours, monetary and other donations was circulated. Food was collected for Amazing Grace.

POLICIES: Evelyn asked for clarification regarding an email she received from International. It was reported Beta’s President and Treasurer signed a paper saying Beta would be going by “Policies” rather than “By-Laws”.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Chris reported about the state meeting. She talked about the seven regions and how they sometimes change. When writing the abbreviation for Alpha Delta Kappa, do not write “D” for Delta, but use the Delta symbol. The CT Fun Night is scheduled for May 1st at the Chowder Pot, Hartford. Since Shirley will no longer be able to attend meetings, others will cover fraternity education. Nancy will cover April and June and Kathy will cover May.

MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: Ellie suggested if each Beta sister found one new member, the organization would double in size.

COURTESY: Mary Ann sent two March birthday cards, one for Ellie and one for Kathy.

PUBLICITY: There was nothing to report. Chris suggested it might be good to have another person help out.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Farm Hill School staff will supplement the cost of items to be placed in the Solnit Center welcome baskets. Chris will have a list of items needed for the baskets at the April meeting. The baskets will be completed at the May meeting. May candy baskets for Cromwell Apple Rehab will be assembled at the May meeting, also. Members are asked to bring spring pictures for the candy baskets. (Spring cards have great pictures.) Sharon will call Apple Rehab to see if there is a room available there for the May meeting. If the May meeting can be held there, all hope Shirley Brown will be able to attend.

NEW BUSINESS

Sharon has a former student who works in a convalescent home and is in need of baby dolls she uses with patients. Kathy, Chris, and Helen each offered to bring one to the April meeting. There was discussion about writing letters to former Beta members and inviting them to return to the chapter. One member wondered if Beta could pay the $10 re-instatement fee. No decisions were made in this regard. Past State and International President Ruth Walsh fell. Helen will send her a get well card from Beta.

Mary Ann moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:30 p.m., seconded by Ellie, and passed. After adjournment Sue Wesoloski presented a program on her trip to Israel.

FRATERNITY EDUCATION: Nancy Rogalsky lead a game about the “ABC’s of Alpha Delta Kappa”, a review of the organization’s facts. Members were encouraged to wear their pins to the next meeting. MEMBERSHIP/NOMINATING: A president-elect is still needed. There was discussion about inviting Farm Hill teachers and teachers outside Middletown to a future meeting. Due to the added responsibilities for Middletown teachers, it will be hard to attract them.

COURTESY: Mary Ann Cannata sent April birthday cards to Shirley Brown and Anne Walsh. A “Thinking of You” card was sent to Shirley Brown, also.

PUBLICITY: Robbie Avery volunteered to help with this committee.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Farm Hill School staff will soon have their dress down day to raise money for Solnit Center welcoming baskets. Nancy will obtain an updated list of contents needed, and the baskets will be assembled at the June meeting. At the May meeting, Beta sisters will have the opportunity to sign up for items they wish to bring in June.

NEW BUSINESS

Robbie Avery was welcomed back from Florida. All were reminded of the state “Fun Night” on May 1st at the Chowder Pot. Diane Petras and Helen Hill are unable to host the May meeting at Apple Rehab, Cromwell. They provided all the basket materials for the patients and asked sisters to substitute for them. Many sisters graciously volunteered to help by arriving early and setting up. Mary Ann, Kathy, Anne, and Pat Speight will be there. Mary Ann and Robbie will provide refreshments. Diane and Helen expressed their gratitude to everyone. Ellie praised everyone and was pleased to say, “This is what sisterhood is all about, helping each other.” The program for 2019-2020 will be set up at the June meeting. Members are encouraged to think of program ideas. Chris will make arrangements to have the September meeting at Farrell’s, Portland.

Ellie Jurczak moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:20 p.m., seconded by Anne Walsh, and passed. After adjournment, Nancy showed a video and spoke about her trip to Russia and Norway.

Beta Chapter Meeting Minutes

Welcome by Chapter President: In Chris’s absence Robbie and Ellie brought the meeting to order at 4 PM. Glad to be at Apple Rehab so Shirley could join us.

Chaplain: Kathy reminded us it was Teacher Appreciation Week: “One child, one teacher, one book, one pencil can change the world” from the book by Nobel Peace prize winner Malala.

Financial Report Treasurer: Nancy reported Savings: $174.98; Altruistic: $568.96; Delegates: $6.54; Checking: $394.35; Collected for the Altruistic: $63.00.

Corresponding Secretary: Evelyn reported there was no correspondence.

Standing Committee Reports:

· Altruistic: Sharon passed around the monthly altruistic form to members.

· Courtesy: MaryAnn reported Sharon’s birthday is May 20th. Sharon said it was a big one for her!

· Publicity: Sue/Robbie: report the web site is available and up to date. Sharon suggested we submit this activity – creating Spring Baskets for the residents of Apple Rehab and Nursing Home to the Kappan. Robbie will do this.

· Other: Helen and Diane had made the preparations for our altruistic activity today. All were involved and socializing. We were all happy to be at the Apple Home so our sister Shirley could join us.

Old Business:

Solnit has an abundance of welcoming baskets. It was decided it would be good to hold off until October and invite Farm Hill Staff to join us in making the baskets. Farm Hill donated $161 towards the baskets.

Robbie forgot to bring the Pot-Luck list so we decided to do usually. Later Sue did pass out one suggesting bring whatever, but this list would help her to know what needed to be supplied.

New Business:

1. News from the May 1st Fun Day at Chowder Pot Ellie reported she, Robbie, Chris, Nancy and Helen were able to attend and had a good time. Sue Plachet was honored as our International President and Connecticut’s own.

2. Chris will take care of the September meeting (at Farrells) and the October meeting will be Solnit Center baskets and hopefully Fraternity Ed. so that any visitors will learn about us. Chris is asking that each of you think about bringing something to do or present at the other meetings for the 2019-20 season. We do not need to think about November as Sharon does the baskets for a nursing home, December is our Holiday Dinner and June is the Potluck at Sue’s. We do need to consider meetings in January, March, April, and May. Sharon would like to invite Kerry Kincy for one of those meetings.

3. For the Longest Day it was decided to have Brunch at Athenia’s on Friday, June 20th 11 AM. Nancy will contact golfers in the chapter to attend a golf tournament in honor of Judy’s Team on Saturday, June 21st.

Checks may be made out to the Alzheimer’s Organization. Please put Judy’s Team on the memo line.

Announcements: Our drawing resulted in $26 to our altruistic fund and $13 to Sue.
