What is Domain Registration?

Domain registration is the registration of a particular domain, the internet website address of an entity and other pertinent information. Domain names are to be associated with the internet protocol address of their respective websites. The term 'domain' refers to the internet address of a website. Domains can also be descriptive, giving an online business its own online identity.

Domain registrars are companies that manage the reservation of different Internet domain names. Domain name registration is done through domain registrars' services. Domain registrars usually work according to the terms of the international standard of the domain name registration associations. These associations regulate the registration and use of domain names and their registrars, such as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

There are different types of domain registrars from which you can choose. Some of the prominent registrars are the GoDaddy, BestKnownHost, HostGator, Namecheap, and I Names Pro. All these companies offer domain registration with various hosting plans such as the managed, reseller, dedicated, free, dedicated control, and mixed hosting plans.

Domain name registration is usually handled by the hosting companies. The hosting companies provide web space for the websites. They maintain a database that contains the details of the registered domain name owners. Whenever a domain name registration request is made, the hosting company sends an email to the registrant informing him about the pending request. Then the client may check the database to see if the domain name he wants to register is already in the list. If not, he may ask to make a request to the hosting company.

The domain registration procedure starts with the applicant creating an account at the web hosting provider's website. After creating an account, he has to enter his full name, desired Top Level Domain, and website address. After the submission of these details, he submits the registration form and later on receives his username and password. After the completion of all these steps, he gets a confirmation mail containing his login details and he is now ready to start his business. He can now successfully complete his domain registration.

Domain name registration and transfer are usually handled by the companies who are the middle-men between the end-user and the registrar. These companies are known as the registrars or the hosts. There are many registrars like NameCheap, BestKnownHost, GoDaddy, and I Names Pro who handle almost all domain registrations in the United States of America. This is the most common way to register a domain. However, there are many other ways like NameSilo, ICANN, Verisign, TLDs, transfers, Private domain Browsing (PBD) and others, which may be used to register a domain.
