How coffee grinders works

For real coffee lovers, making coffee means performing a whole ritual action. Someone likes to brew coffee in a Turk or cezve, while others prefer to use coffee makers or coffee machines.

The unifying element is the raw coffee, which must be ground with your own hands before the coffee ceremony.

To begin with, grinder coffee best are divided into 2 types according to their main grinding mechanism - millstones and rotary ones.

Rotary coffee grinder: how it works

The device is powered by the mains, which means it has a motor. It is located inside the case, which externally can be plastic or metal. The top of the body is "crowned" with a container with a transparent lid for loading grains, which is located on steel rotary knives for grinding. The container is attached to the body with plastic clips. It holds from 50 to 120 g of the substance (depending on the power of the device).

One of the main parameters of coffee grinders is their power. How the coffee grinder grinds the beans depends on it. The more watts, the finer the coffee powder is. The minimum power of the devices is 80 W, the maximum is 270 W. Higher power provides a long working time in one session, which allows the knives to grind the working material multiple times.

However, experts do not recommend choosing "extreme" options. A budget low-power coffee grinder may simply not live up to even its name, and an expensive high-speed coffee grinder can quickly deteriorate. Therefore, the "golden mean" is good - 160-180 watts.

The disadvantages of rotary coffee grinders include motor breakdowns, the absence of a dispenser for the filled beans and a separate container for the finished product. In some devices, it is collected in the same place where the grains were. This is inconvenient because the knives get in the way. These grinders have also been observed to deteriorate plastic housing parts.

Burr grinder: How it works

The principle of operation is the passage of grains between the millstones. Their distance from each other affects the degree of grinding of the coffee. All burr grinders are equipped with a function for adjusting the coffee grind. As a result, the coffee grinder can "provide" powder, ground into dust for Turkish coffee or coarse - for brewing in a French press. On average, modern devices have up to 15 grinding modes.

Such functions must be provided with adequate power. A burr coffee grinder has an average power of 250 to 300 watts. The container holds up to 300 g of beans.

Unlike rotary coffee grinders, all models of burr coffee grinders are equipped with dispensers for raw materials and separate containers for collecting the finished product. In addition, some "representatives" have such a function as setting the amount of ground coffee.

Let's say you load the container with grains "all the way", but the machine will process only the volume you specified, and the remaining grains will be processed later. Very "advanced" coffee grinders grind beans according to the specified number of cups of coffee.

Burr coffee grinders are several orders of magnitude more expensive than rotary coffee grinders. Conical disc grinders are more expensive than flat disc grinders. They are believed to be more durable, stronger and run almost silently.

Manual coffee grinders

It takes 15 to 20 minutes to get the fragrant powder that collects in the drawer. The processing of the grains takes place in the already known millstones method.

In a manual coffee grinder, the main thing is the strength of the handle and the quality of all the components of the device. Given the degree and frequency of the load, they must be able to withstand the pressure exerted on them.
