I assumed that all aspects of the traditional office phone have improved over the years, including ringtones, but I was sadly mistaken. The particular phones I installed are Grandstream and the default ringtones are horrible!

Please can we have some sanity in the office because these stupid ringtones on mobile phones are driving me nuts! This crazy frog thing is the latest in a long line of irritating tones, and it has got to be the worst so far I reckon.

Once upon a time I found them amusing, but that was before the advent of the polyphonic ringtone. Since sometime around 2002 life in the office has been hell with Beyonce, The Darkness, Black Eyed Peas and all the other crap they're churning out these days. A real nice touch that, take a perfectly useful piece of technology and make it as irritating as hell.

OK, so we can't exactly bring back the old beep beep ringtones, but in my opinion they were a lot less obtrusive than the new polyphonic ones. To make matters worse, you've had these things driving you up the wall during the day at work; you get home for some peace and quiet, only to find you have these bleeding chimes going through you're head!

They're not clever you know! I lie awake at night with this modern day elevator music going through my head. Another thing that really bothers me, is when colleagues go off to lunch or to a meeting and leave their mobile on their desk. You can guarantee it will ring a dozen times before they return, and then stop just as you are about to go pick it up.

And why, please tell me why do people insist on having their phone on the highest volume setting? Surely they can't all be deaf? I still think the idea of having a bucket of water for rogue mobiles is a good idea. Any offending mobile left unattended and left constantly ringing would be deposited in the bucket. Good riddance!

There is a co-worker who has this annoying ringtone of "In the end - Linkin park" and gets about 10 to 15 calls every day. Every time his phone rings I get really annoyed. I feel like I should tell him to keep his phone on vibrate mode but he is new and employed via a third party recruiter. Should I tell him his song or whatever he has set it is disturbing and annoying?

I am not sure how should I ask him since he is very new and other people don't seem to have any issues with it so far and he is employee of a third party working at our office for a project. I am not sure how long he is going to be here.

No need to mention anything specific on the choice of song - just mention that the volume of the ringtone is affecting your concentration at work. Ask him gently to use the phone in a way that does not create distraction and annoyance to other co-workers.

Think of it this way, by letting them know what is right / expected of them, you're setting them off in a right path at the beginning of their career. This will help them in future - so you're being and doing good to them.

Put the burden on yourself and act as though they're doing you a favor. (At the end of the day, they are. It's not a difficult favor, and one that you'd expect people to be happy to perform, but it's still a favor.)

Assume noble intent. Most of the time, most people are trying their best to live their own life as politely and conflict-free as possible. Most people are also oblivious jackasses. (This includes you, the reader, and me, the author) If you just make people away that they're failing in their own pursuit of politeness, they will adjust their behavior accordingly, usually.

If you don't want to single out this particular co-worker due to his particular ring-tone, address the issue in general form on the team level. You can, for instance, suggest to disallow any (sound-based) ring-tones for (private) phones in general in the office to improve the general work atmosphere with respect to distraction and noise level. In all the offices I've worked so far that rule was already in place explicitly or implicitly. This way, your colleague will not feel singled out for his particular ring-tone and you have a commonly agreed-upon rule you can point out to anyone using distracting ring-tones in the future.

Whether to restrict such a rule to private or also company phones will have to depend on how noisy your office in general is, how well one can rely on vibration alarms and how reachable everyone needs to be.

Is it possible to download the MIDI file to a Motorola V550? I have Cingular and was able to download the polyphonic, but at one point during the ring it just sounds like noise and it takes away from the awesome Office theme song sound! Thanks!

I have verizon and the LG vx8300. I make ringtones all the time for my phone. If your phone supports mp3 ringtones just make sure that the clip is under 300kb. i use dBpowerAMP to do this. then i use to send the ringtone to my phone.

I have a Verizon RAZR and so far none of the tricks that anyone has suggested in getting the ringtone on my phone. I tried compressing the mp3 and sending either by email or the uploader that someone posted, but no luck. Anyone have any success with a Verizon RAZR?

I am practically computer illiterate. Are there any other ways to compress the file to send to my phone? I went to DbPowerAmp and am hesitant to download it as this is my work computer. I guess I can wait till I get a chance at home, but I am impatient! Any suggestions?

I have the LG 8100 with Verizon, and the above advice didnt work. It transferred the sound to my phone, saved it as an .mid, but is in my sounds folder and cant be used as a ringtone. Any more advice?

I have a Motorola I850 phone with Nextel as my provider. I have not been able to find anywhere on the Internet on how I can get The Office ringtone for my phone. Does anyone have any suggestions or help?

whenever i click on any of those formats (mps, wav, midi) it just goes to a link and i cant download anything. does that happen to anyone else?? im trying to put it in my verizon motorola razr. thanks

77: Go to officetally.com directly from your Pearl and click on the link for the mp3 format of the ringtone. the song should play for you on your blackberry. Press the menu button and save the file on your blackberry or media card. =)

1. Click MP3 up at the top of the page

2. Go to the recording feature on your cellphone

3. Record the 30 second clip

4. Save the clip on your phone

5. Send yourself a picture message with the sound clip selected as the audio

6. Receive the message with the sound clip and you are now able to save it as a ringtone.

My office recently upgraded our phone system and we love the new system except the only issue is most of the staff has the VVX 300 series and cannot tell if someone is ringing them desk to desk or they are receiving an external call from outside clients/customers. Is there a way to change the ringer for external calls vs. intercom calls? Globally would be better, but even individually would be fine.

welcome to the Polycom Community.

Both the community's Must Read First and the community's FAQ reference the basic minimum information a new or follow up post should contain.

This ensures the questions having to be asked are limited and any new or follow up post contains the right amount of details to ensure any voluntary participant within the community does not spend additional time chasing basic information.

As a reminder the basic information asked for:

UC Software 4.0.0 or later via the Web Interface Utilities > Phone Backup & Restore > Phone Backup > Phone Backup. Please rename into .TXT or Zip the file to attach.

Since UC Software 5.9.0 simply provide this via the Web Interface Diagnostics > Download Support Information Package

Whilst providing some of these details may not directly impact any possible answer the community can provide, it does enable Polycom to have an overview of the current software used. In addition providing all details at the same time allow us to check logs or look up a potential support partners if an issue needs to come into support. It also enables us to verify the entitlement for using features.

I definitely have had customers desiring this. While some of this would be dependent upon what kind of platform you're running the phones on and if you can set different alerts in the SIP header, etc.

A more simple way that I know will work is to just use the local Contacts on the phone, which allow for rintone specification. Even if you're deploying BLF, you could still set contacts that just wouldn't show on the phone. One of my previous clients wanted everyone to get the phone when the boss called, so they actually recorded a ringtone that said, "This is an important call for you. Please, pick it up." We built the URL for the ringtone into the phone, and voila! (don't get me started with all the weird practical jokes we play in the office using this functionality and remote provisioning)

For your "global" deployment I'd recommend generating the directory.xml files for the users, in which you can set ringtone. While I can't share it because of intellectual property rights, I use a macro-enabled Excel spreadsheet to generate the file(s) and then upload to the provisioning server.

I generally leave First/Last blank and just use the (label) field. I have left blank as presumably this user is already on a phone via BLF (set as desired). The parameter determines what tone is played. To determine the correct syntax, create a local contact on the phone exactly as desired, let the phone update its directory on the server, and note the values generated. On the phone itself you'll see the labelled ringtones, in the directory you can take note of the numerical value when building your directory files. If you're keeping all the directory files the same, to the best of my knowledge there is no issue if the user's extension is also referenced in the directory...

Stick this somewhere in the phone's config and customize as necessary. saf.x sets Sampled Audio File; in this case I'm using the ringtone for line 1, but note in my particular setup my custom file at saf.2 is ringer 16 152ee80cbc
