Acer's $879.99 17.3-inch Nitro 5 includes a 2.4-GHz 9th Gen Intel Core i5-9300H processor, 8GB of RAM (upgradeable to 32GB), a 512GB PCIe SSD (with room for a second 2.5-inch SSD or hard drive -- Acer includes the upgrade kit and cable), GeForce GTX 1650 graphics and full-HD 1920 x 1080 display, all packed into a hefty, tried-and-true "gamer-inspired" chassis of bold colors and angular edges.

The $669 base model has the same bulky body, while replacing Intel and Nvidia components with AMDs. In that model, you get a 2.1-GHz Ryzen 5 3550H quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon RX 560X graphics and a smaller, 15.6-inch IPS backlit screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

The Asus TUF Gaming FX505 has been around for a while now, acting as some sort of big brother to the well-known FX504 (read the review here). It was launched in November last year with Intel’s 8th Gen Core series of processors. The one we reviewed had the Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with 6GB of vRAM. My senior colleague Swapnil, who reviewed the FX505, seemed quite pleased with it.

This year, however, Asus is trying out a new recipe while still retaining the outgoing models. It’s thrown AMD’s Ryzen 5 processor into the mix along with Radeon dedicated graphics instead of an NVIDIA card. To be more specific, Asus launched two AMD Ryzen 5-powered mid-range gaming laptops last month: the 15-inch FX505DY (at Rs 59,990) and the 17-inch FX705DY (Rs 69,990). The review unit we’ve got here with us is the FX505DY. Apart from the Ryzen 5, it’s got 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, and a Radeon RX560X graphics card. Let’s see how all of these ingredients taste in the final product.

The IdeaPad 330 is sold in various configurations at a wide range of prices. We tested a $265 budget model with a 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel display, an Intel Celeron N4100 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive.

A more premium IdeaPad 330 with a Core i3-8130U CPU is available for $299, and there is also an AMD version with a Ryzen 5 2500U CPU, 12GB of RAM, and a 2TB HDD for $663.

The IdeaPad 330 looks like an ordinary laptop. By that, I mean that if I asked you to draw a laptop, you'd probably land on something that looked a lot like the IdeaPad 330. It's a rectangle with rounded corners, and has a silver lid with a Chrome logo in one corner. The IdeaPad's chassis isn't thick, nor thin, and the laptop's silver lid and dark-gray undercarriage are made of hard plastic.

Gaming laptops are aplenty these days, but it’s common knowledge to expect a good one to cost around the ballpark of RM5,000. Anything cheaper is considered entry-level. But it’s okay if you want to get an entry-level gaming laptop if you know what to expect.

Enter the ASUS TUF FX505 line. The 2019 edition sees all of its lineup utilising AMD Ryzen processors, complemented with Nvidia GPUs. It has a wide range of variants, covering some good price points. But what about the cheapest variant, the FX505DD? Can you game comfortably with a sub-RM3,000 laptop?
