When you first start out with Wordpress, it seems like an overwhelming task to learn everything there is about the platform in order to become a master at using it. And while that may not be completely true, there are some things that everyone should know when they get started. There are also some tips that can help make your site more search engine friendly.
Before we begin, I would like to point something out - If you want to rank highly on Google (or any other major search engine), don't just put up a blog or website without doing anything else. You need to optimize for search engines. This means taking into account what keywords people will type in to find information on whatever topic you're writing about. It also means making sure that all of the content on your page has keyword-rich text.
I'm going to go over a few different ways to do this so that you can see how important it really is. First off, if you use WordPress as your blogging software, then you already have most of these tools built right in. The free version of WP comes with several plugins designed specifically to improve the overall performance of your site. One of those is Yoast SEO, which provides a whole bunch of great features including advice on optimizing for search engines (which we'll talk about below). Another plugin worth mentioning is All In One Schema by Matt Cutts, who is one of the top authorities on search engine optimization. This plugin helps you format your pages correctly so that Google can index them quickly.
Now, let me show you a quick way to create a sitemap. Most webmasters think that creating a sitemap is too difficult to bother doing. But the reality is that Google actually loves sitemaps. They provide useful data for their algorithm and allow users to navigate around your site easily. So, even though it takes time to build one, it's well worth the effort. Here's how to set up a simple one on your own server.
First, head over to Google Webmaster Tools and sign into your account. Then click Sitemaps from the left menu. Next, select Add XML Site Map. Give your map a name and save it to your server. Now, whenever you update your posts, add the following code to the end of each post:
You can also link directly from your home page to the sitemap file:
This tells Google where to look for your sitemap. Once you've created your sitemap, you can upload it to Google Webmaster Tools via FTP or another method. Just remember to keep adding links like the ones above when you publish new articles!
There are several other methods for building internal links, but here are a couple of easy ones. First, change your permalinks from /postname.html to /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%.html. Second, place a heading tag within every third paragraph. These tags tell search engines exactly what the article is about, which makes it easier for search engines to understand it better. For example, instead of saying "How to Make Money Online," say:
Include the keywords in both the title and body of your article. Not only does this make it much easier for readers to find your stuff, it also helps search engines locate relevant results faster. To do this, you can either add the keywords to your URL manually, or use a tool called Google Autocomplete. This is especially handy if you plan on publishing lots of short articles because it allows you to fill in the blanks yourself.
Lastly, consider incorporating external links. When someone searches for specific phrases, they often include the names of websites they visit frequently. By linking back to those sites through your content, you give them extra credit with Google. Also, don't forget to link internally to pages on your site that contain related information. This builds trust between visitors and your brand.
If you follow all of the recommendations listed above, you won't ever have to worry about getting penalized by Google again. As long as you continue to work hard and stay focused on improving your site, you'll eventually reach the top of the heap. Good luck!
