Washington Center for the Performing Arts

The Washington Center for the Performing Arts is a beloved cultural facility in South Puget Sound dedicated to offering diverse entertainment and cultural activities to residents across five counties. It's situated in the heart of Washington State's capital city and has become a hub for the performing arts in the area. Their venue annually presents various nationally and internationally touring artists from different genres and styles. Additionally, they are home to over 20 local performance groups known as our Artistic Partners. Since its opening in 1985, the facility has hosted thousands of events, drawing in nearly 2 million visitors. However, the history of The Washington Center dates back even further to the old Liberty Theater, a vaudeville house constructed on the current site in 1924. While the building's exterior retains some of the 1924 architecture, the interior has been transformed into a contemporary and modern space.

Choral Conductor From Olympia to Retire

Gary Witley, a 74-year-old choral conductor from Olympia, is retiring as the Masterworks Choral Ensemble’s conductor after 42 years of service. He will conduct his final “Golden Age of Broadway” concert on June 17th at 7:30 pm at the Washington Center for Performing Arts. Ben Luedcke will take over as the new artistic director and conductor on July 1st. Witley expressed his excitement over passing his leadership role to a competent successor and seeing the group thrive. Those who have worked with Witley for years expressed their gratitude for his leadership, and while it’s sad to see him leave, they know the group will continue to be a positive force in the community. Angi Swan, the group’s piano accompanist, described the ensemble as a family that has left a positive mark on the music culture in Olympia. Read more.
