The trend of operating small aircraft has taken off during the last couple of years. Although the legislature is getting more strict in regard to flying operations, drones are growing more and more popular.
The task of buying a drone could be difficult for professionals, let alone beginners and enthusiasts. There are lots of things one needs to pay attention to, from gimbal and altitude hold to battery life and camera quality. Since it is a wise decision to embark on the journey with a budget-friendly drone, I have put together a list of affordable drones under $100.
Even though they don’t offer high-end features like their more expensive counterparts, they are fitted for everyday uses and all of them provide a great learning curve that will help in refining your flying skills and honing your aircraft taste.

1. EACHINE E58 WiFi FPV Quadcopter Foldable Drone RTF
EACHINE E58 WiFi FPV Quadcopter Foldable Drone RTF weighs 449 grams and sits in a solid category of drones that are suitable for beginners and some more advanced users, interested in photography. It comes with a video quality of 720p. The camera is great, and since the drone is compact and portable it can easily fit into the camera bag.
You will need one Lithium-ion battery (which is included), however, I suggest getting a couple of them if you plan to shoot more since the charge lasts around 10 minutes. The assembly of the drone is intuitive and fast, and the aircraft is quite easy to fly. The control system will not baffle anyone, and average users won’t need much time adjusting the controls.
Flying is responsive and accurate, yet the flying speed is a bit disappointing. My walking pace was often faster than the drone’s speed, and it didn’t fare so well under the harsh wind. On the other hand, it is stable in the absence of wind and it got me awesome images. The flip macro button works great, which was important for me. Although the presented aircraft doesn’t fall in the professional category it offers a solid value for the money you will spend on it.
2. Tello Quadcopter Drone
Tello Quadcopter Drone comes with HD Camera, virtual reality options represent an excellent small drone aimed at kids and adults who are beginning to explore the world of drone flying. It comes with a VR headset and two antennas that make video transmission quite stable. The drone posses a high-quality image processor which will enable even unskilled users to boast high-end images that they can share their work via smartphones.
The battery autonomy of the drone is superior. I was able to get nearly 12 minutes (out of 13 minutes of advertised battery span). The flying capabilities are surprisingly great as well. In fast mode, I was able to achieve a speed of almost 20 mph, with a range of 80 meters in the open space. Upon getting the drone, I ran a calibration routine, but my personal impression is that it can fly quite stable even without it.
On the other hand, the drone is light and it can be challenging to run it in the strong wind. The images are the quality of 5 Mpx and they are surprisingly good in environments of good lighting and when the drone is stable. The video quality is exceptional and the testing piece could outperform even more expensive drones.
3. UDI U818A-HD 2.4GHz 4 CH 6 Axis Quadcopter
The UDI U818A HD is a drone that comes with a headless/IOC function which makes the learning curve of flying easier while allowing the operator to slowly learn specifics of each orientation of the quadcopter. It is equipped with the latest 6-axis flight control system and 360° Eversion which enables super action and great performance. The camera is, unfortunately modest, with only 1 Mpx HD video camera with a framerate of 30 Fps.
However, the control of the aircraft is easy to learn and beginners will be able to shoot videos easily. One of the selling points of the drone is its durability. During the testing I had encounters with trees, ground even brick walls, yet it worked flawlessly after serious impacts. The battery life averages from 8 to 12 minutes, which depends on the flying conditions.
The package attaches two batteries and a battery charge. I needed about 90 minutes to charge both batteries. My complaint lies in the video department. The quality is low, with lots of grains and motor noise that is more than noticeable in the video. Overall, the drone is solid in terms of return investments, especially if you didn’t have prior flying experience.
4. Cheerwing Syma X5C-1 Explorers
Cheerwing Syma X5C-1 Explorers is a 2.4Ghz, 4CH, and 6-Axis Gyro RC quadcopter drone that has a variety of control options, with a six-axis gyroscope for precise hovering. The aircraft comes with a key 360° roll. The control distance expands about 30 meters, with the playtime around five to seven minutes, which is lower compared to other drones on the list.
On the other hand, the drone in matter weighs 610 grams. The camera has a nice 2 Mpx resolution which will suffice for basic needs in good lighting. If you decided just to hover and take snaps, you could get above-average playtime. Just be advised that any maneuvering shortens the time accordingly.
Video quality is satisfying, although there is a noticeable level of grain. However, the drone proves to be indestructible. During the testing, I had encounters with roofs and power transmissions lines, yet even the images were intact. My objection goes to the lack of altitude hold which means pilots will have to press throttle all the time while flying. On the positive side, the controller does a superb job and ergonomics are great for its price range.
5. Attop 10
Attop 10 comes with a 360° flip camera, with 120° wide-angle HD capabilities which improve the filming experience. One of the most favorite selling points of the drone is the support of “toss to launch” which allows the pilot to unlock the blades and make the drone fly by throwing it horizontally. I also fancy the safety properties of the aircraft. It has four propeller guards and four legs which help with a safe landing.
Furthermore, there is a setting of low-power status which warns users of the battery life which can prevent the crash. Attop 10 supports multi-functions which offer an easy and intuitive way of control. It has the altitude hold function that keeps the drone hovering. I was able to fly almost 60 meters in the air, which is much higher compared to the competition.
Despite its medium size, the pilot will be able to maneuver through more challenging environments. The battery autonomy sits on average. You can get over 10 minutes by hovering and taking photos, and half of it if you maneuver. There are two batteries included in the package which is a nice feat. The camera quality is excellent. It sports a 1080p option and the video quality is quite nice.
As you can see from the list above, being on the budget doesn’t have to mean you will have to abstain from enjoying the drone flying experience. Although most of the semi-advanced or professional drones come with high price tags, the list of five budget-friendly drones I have comprised will give you a solid choice for the purchase.
