Over 500 acres and growing, you are free to explore the property and discover all it has to offer. During one multiday visit, I never made it to the park as I just kept exploring the property around me by day and taking astrophotography pics at night. When visiting, XB is always my first pick to stay.

Keep in mind the speed limit is 45 mph so a 40-mile round trip can take longer than anticipated. If you are short of time, this would probably be a leg I drop because the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and The Chisos are just staggering.

Short hike you can quickly do. An old ranch that obviously is rich with underground moisture. You can always identify a spring or water source in the desert by the Cottonwoods that crowd the area. There are old ruins of the ranch home, dilapidated windmills, and even one where the water still seeps up giving the area its lush landscape. This feels like a deep green oasis in the middle of the Chihuahuan desert. And if you like to birdwatch, grab your binoculars.

Ohhh this one is a bit painful to talk about. Once a beautiful and well-preserved piece of history that included a quaint little store that once served as an old post office now is just a burnt-out shell due to a 2019 fire. This is also where the seasonal visitor center resided. There are still a few ruins easily visible in the area. There is another structure that has since been set up to receive visitors, but I have yet to stop here. I guess I am still in denial.

Protip: If there has been recent rain, sometimes crossing Terlingua Creek to continue on this trail (into the Canyon) is difficult or even impassable. Typically not a problem though. But hey, this is the driving part of the trip, right?

There has been some concern in the discussions about have a 4x4 for driving Old Maverick. I just drove the road twice this weekend (10/2/2021) in my 2 wheel-drive 4-Runner and had no issues. While there may be a couple pieces of the stretch that may feel sketchy in a Corolla, I managed just fine with no worries. At the same time, I grew up on ranch roads where we plowd our Ford LTD through situations that shouldn't be meant for those vehicles. Maybe it's experience. I saw a car driving making no attempt to avoid any rocks that are jutting out and plowing right over them. You have to drive the dirt road smart, avoid what you can. Avoid rocks jutting out, you can recognize these because they hace black tire marks on the side from people that didn't avoid them. The park has put up a 4x4 sign on the road. I don't know if thats recent or I just never paid attention. If the road is wet, yet 4x4 is required. I guess I'd say a high-clearance vehicle with good tires. And with that, ultimately, travel at your own risk. I took some photos of the roughest parts. This includes slight rocky inclines and sandy dry creek beds. 99.5% of the road looks like this first pic, although the storm over the Chisos was threatening me.

For this tour the Prius should be fine if the tires are in good shape. All the roads ar good except Old Maverick is dirt. Though you may find other roads on the trip that would be fun to have the 44 like, not mentioned here, Black Gap Road.

Big Bend is very remote and will certainly call for a road trip, but that can be part of the fun. Your ES 300 could easily do this trip. The seasons are subjective but most people prefer late fall through early spring to avoid extreme temperatures. However, Big Bend gets VERY crowded (relatively) during Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Years, and Spring Break.

I am planning on being there January 20-24, 2022. Debating on renting a SUV or using my Honda Civic, any recommendations? Driving from Houston. Based on your comment earlier, looks like we may no be able to see Milky Way, is that true? Thanks

Thanks Adam, we are planning on driving as you recommended and go on hikes every day. Would certainly want to enjoy night sky, sunrise and sunsets. Also visit Boquillas in Mexico. Are there any places that require higher clearance vehicle then we will rent one? For three days what would you recommend the most? Thanks!

Yeah you should be able to, just leave early enough to make many stops. And if your not coming from Study Butte, you can probably cut Main Park Road, the green section, if time is short. But also read this for reference -day-in-big-bend-national-park/

Hey thanks! I guess what do you think as short? You could do just the Window View Trail which is hardly a hike at all, but a good view of The Window a short walk from the basins visitor center. Other than that a good look out point would be the Sotol Vista, its on the map on Ross Maxwell Sceneic Drive. Or if you want like a mile hike, the Burro Spring Trail (the end of it) provides an incredible view. -the-park/hikes/day-hikes/burro-spring-trail/

The instructors were very personable, professional, and patient. They have a true passion for what they do, and you can tell they love to teach, but they really want you to learn. It truly is the BEST!!

I started with no manual transmission experience and zero confidence in whether I would even be able to learn how to operate one. After a week of classroom instruction and three weeks of practical road driving instruction, I was able to pass my DMV test on the first try. If I can do it, anyone can.

I will be driving from Milan to Bellagio for the first time - Which would be more 'scenic,' along Lake Como's western leg through Nesso? or the eastern leg through Mandello del Lario? Any other considerations besides 'scenery'? thank you

The first time we drove to Bellagio it was very slow along the west side of the lake and a large tour bus got stuck on a turn delaying everyone else. This trip includes a ferry ride across to Bellagio, from, I thin, Menaggio. Another time we had a driver and he drove up the peninsula to Bellagio at the end. The first option was more scenic but you can run into problems like we did.

On the western leg of the lake, follow 583 along the peninsula. While it is certainly the most scenic, keep in mind that as the driver you will have limited opportunity to view the scenery. Tight road, narrow lanes. Unless you have driven here before, it is quite the experience. Having a car in Bellagio is difficult. I'll leave it at that. However, for a different experience, consider shooting up the middle of the peninsula, then driving down into Nesso and follow the shoreline from there. Personally, I enjoy driving the mountain roads.

If you are leaving from Milan inner city (not from MXP, to be clear) my preferred route would be through Pusiano, Canzo, Asso and the low Ghisallo pass - an inland route. Or Como, Erba, Asso and Ghisallo. The two lake routes leading to Bellagio are quite narrow and more intense to drive.

As pointed by other posters, Mandello is on the wrong side of the lake. You are not completely wrong, however, as you could consider a ferry from Varenna to Bellagio. Still, the Ghisallo routes look the shorter.

The total running time depends very much from exactly where in Milan are you leaving. As getting out of the city may take some time, some alternate route can actually be faster of the apparently shorter ones.

It is no secret that Yellowstone National Park is huge. I mean which park covers almost three states, has five entrances, and nearly 470 miles of roads? As you look towards planning a visit to Yellowstone, driving long distances can sound intimidating especially if you are strapped for time.

If you read our previous post, you might have noticed that we flew into Salt Lake City but departed out of West Yellowstone airport. This helped us avoid a long return drive, save time, making the one-way drop-off fee for car rental totally worthwhile.

Enough talking, now to the point. If you search for routes from Salt Lake City Airport to Yellowstone National Park South Entrance, Google suggests the following options (click to open map in Google Maps):

Have your fellow passenger be camera-ready as you start descending down. On a clear day, the shades of blue on this lake look too good to be true! Most likely, Google Maps will lead you to the marina center where there is a parking fee, but you can park for free at the state park and walk to the lake. We had our first picnic lunch of the trip at this spot ?

Besides the lake, this town is famous for its raspberry shake. Head over to Raspberry Square and get yours! With the views of the lake and the yummy shake in hand, life will seem good. Count some more time in as you start driving north, as the vistas on the right side will urge you to pull over constantly.

The 80-mile Star Valley scenic byway stretch is one of the most pleasurable drives that you will encounter on your journey to Yellowstone. The byway begins along the Idaho-Wyoming border on US-89 and continues till the Teton county line till Snake River Canyon up north.

This remarkable national park is known for its alpine terrain and mighty Teton range. Normally I am an early riser but Supriya is not. But on this trip, she was up and pushing me to get in the car before sunrise. So next morning (and every morning thereafter in Yellowstone), we were driving around to the scenic spots or trails before the 10 AM crowd barged in. 152ee80cbc
