Located about halfway between Portofino and the small town of Camogli, San Fruttuoso is as picture-perfect as Italian beaches get. The small cove's appeal lies in its hidden location (you can only reach it by hiking from Portofino or catching a ferry), gorgeous blue water, and backdrop of a medieval abbey surrounded by mountains.

Right near the beautiful and underrated city of Siracusa (the closest airport is Catania), the Vendicari Nature Reserve is a protected haven where flamingos, herons, and storks are more populous than humans and the pale aqua waters are calm and clean. Located in the Maddalena Archipelago between Corsica and Sardinia, Isola di Spargi's coastline could almost be mistaken for tropical Tahiti. The beaches here are not flanked by dramatic cliffs like in most other areas in Italy; instead, they are backed by palm trees and lush island plants. The shallow turquoise waters are perfect for snorkeling and the silvery sand is made for all-day sunbathing.

This super-secluded beach on the spectacular Riviera del Conero is accessible only by shuttle or boat from Porto Numana. The shore is made up of fine, white pebbles, which lead into the striking, emerald green Adriatic. The best views are from the ocean, where you can admire the steep white cliffs of Monte Conero towering over the beach before you.

This beach is a long stretch of rice-like, blindingly white granite pebbles on the less-touristy West Coast of Sardinia. It can get crowded in peak season, but the beachgoers are mostly locals. The surrounding area, known as the Sinis Peninsula, offers sandy and rocky beaches within walking distance from megalithic sites and Roman ruins.

The Amalfi coast is famous for its delightfully divine towns that sit high above the sea on the sides of rocky cliffs. Smaller and less glamorous than neighboring beaches, Spiaggia del Fornillo is a special little beach with pretty pebbles and clear waters. Take a stroll from the buzzing beach at Positano, down a couple of steps, and slip into the unpretentious and peaceful atmosphere of Fornillo beach.

At 300-meters long, La Pelosa could compete with some of the beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. The beach is a popular spot for local families and groups of friends to spend days off together, which creates a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

The lack of easy access makes it all the more beautiful, remote and undeveloped. Without the usual tourist traps that often surround popular beaches, Cala Granara is able to remain an undeveloped bay, where maccia trees grow sporadically along the sand that gently slopes into the sea, and the water sparkles in the sun, revealing a spectrum of greens and blues.

Situated along the coast, the little suburb of Torre del Greco offers a mix of public and private beaches along the coastline. It is in Salento that the beaches in Apulia most resemble the white Caribbean stretches of sand. Punta Prosciutto near Porto Cesareo is a haven of fine sand, azure sea and wild dunes. And it is a favourite with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
