I've been to every website, and I've heard again and again that FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) has the best sound quality AND it compresses the file. But I'm wondering if there is a format with better sound quality. (I don't care about anything else.) I have heard that WAV is good, but is the sound quality better than FLAC? And are there any others that are better?

"I have heard" - the gold standard for audio quality is in how it sounds. And in many cases, the hardware you use and the combination matter. If you must know foobar 2000 has a great A/B testing function you can try to decide for yourself.

Flac is lossless. Many people can't tell the difference between high bitrate mp3 and flac (I can on my home listening gear, but even then its not a massive difference). Wav is uncompressed audio. Flac is losslessly compressed audio. For most definitions of lossless, and decoders that arn't completely garbage, the output should be the same.

Practically speaking at the same given sample rate without any other bottlenecks FLAC will sound exactly the the same as the wav file. For that matter, any lossless audio file should sound exactly the same as any other lossless audio file.

With smaller file sizes. You can find the sample UI used here - its the 48mhz clip from Jean-Michel Jarre's Equinox analysed with spek. The nice thing with analysis like this is your audio gear dosen't make a difference . The lossless "raw" PCM file, and the flac file I converted from it are for all intents and purposes identical when played back

There's been a push towards higher sample rates but arguably, beyond a certain point the improvements are marginal. Chances are, the sort of folks who demand 96 or 192 khz audio files also have silver cables, carefully burnt in power cords made of hand selected materials and other forms of audiophoolery. Its just an excuse to try to sell you hardware that dosen't perform any better.

Even with different sample rates - 48khz is common, and while some sources promise higher sample rates - people who write audio codecs suggest it might actually sound worse. The frequencies you 'miss out' on are not audible, and your sound output is going to have issues playing them.

WAV is not an audio format at all; rather, it can contain audio formats. WAV can contain audio in any format, including MP3 and ...why, FLAC! WAV is comparable to FLAC only and only when it contains uncompressed audio, or audio compressed with a lossless codec.

This post might sound like a newbie, but recently I was so into SQ and I took a step forward to go for SQ sound system set up in Ford Fiesta, the path to an audiophile world starts in my Ford Fiesta car audio upgrade. The right choice for me, for choosing sound quality over SPL, rather than blasting loud music till you shake your car interior, SPL is a no-no for me at this age. I go for SQ.

I found SQ setup are more enjoyable and relaxing, sat down, close eyes and feel the voice and instruments played in front of your car dashboard, left to right, right to left. I also wrote a guide about how to setup SQ car audio in more details, maybe you can check it out.

I really like the Match digital sound processor by Audiotec Fischer, a German product, it is best audio equipment I ever have for my car. Although my head unit can do the time alignment and stuff, leaving it to Match DSP to handle the listening position works well enough. It looks like the picture below.

Back to the Match DSP, my tuner really took his time off with his laptop and RTA equipment to fine tune the EQ manually. EQ stands for the equalizer, where you can tune the frequency of bass, mid-bass, mid-range, the highs, treble etc by sliding up and down to make your music sounds good to your ear.

I get my A-pillar customized to get the tweeters up for better sound staging. There is a huge improvement by moving those tweeters higher at ear level from the dashboard. Vocals and instruments from a Jazz song or other genres will be more noticeable. The A-pillar cost about RM400 which took 2 days to complete.

No native format is going to be exactly like MQA because of the special filter kernel it uses, but the higher the sample rate, the better. DSD is going to be a little similar to, and superior to MQA because it uses really gentle filtering processes.

All things being equal, DSD sounds better, and the equivalency between DSD and PCM data rates is IMO not meaningful because the formats sound quite different and increase in sample rate produces different sonic effects for each.Higher sample rates for DSD increase the dynamic range, while higher sample rates for PCM increase the bandwidth.

You certainly can concentrate on the native DSD stuff, but then you will notice that you are missing many of the best sounding recordings. Reason is, that the quality of the recording plays a much bigger role than the format. And surprisingly some of the best sounding labels only record PCM (and distribute those recordings by PCM downloads or converted to SACD/DSD).

Then there are the mentioned bigger labels like Pentatone and several more offering native DSD, but imo the quality of their recordings usually are not on the level of those above mentioned best audiophile ones who are mostly doing PCM and who are also recording large scale groups of musicians.

I guess a caveat would be the genre of music. 80% of my SACDs and DSF files are pop, rock, or jazz recordings sourced from analog, maybe 10% are native DSD recordings like David Elias, a few are DXD (although I usually just buy the DXD file) and I have 6 SACDs and 3 classical DSD downloads that are sourced from actual PCM recordings of 24/174 and lower (a couple as low as 20 bit 44.1khz).

And yes, sorry to be contentious, you can easily beat good PCM with good DSD. If the recording is equally good, you will get a much more accurate and realistic reproduction with DSD128 than any PCM format. I know because I have done this often. Every single PCM format changes the sound for the negative from what comes in off the microphones or off the tape machine, but with DSD you can barely tell the difference.

Octave may attract better material in time. Linn Records started simply to provide the best possible pressings to test and demonstrate the LP12 turntable, before the days of CD, and it took some years to attract good artists, let alone the world class roster they now have.

The idea of an artist-led label is not new either. Onyx Records was set up 15 years ago to enable established artists to do what they want to do, not what they are told to do. It worked because they had top industry executives who could attract the talent. This explains what it does and why it worked:

Interesting that the ones favoring digital generally and propagating DSD (for good reason) are argumenting how much worse PCM or even PCM edited DSD sounds compared to native, analog edited DSD, given the fact that over 90% of digital releases use this worse technology. Vinyl listeners are aware of that

I think Linn did record in DSD for a while, until about 10 or more years ago. By then they had stopped making disc spinners and SACD/DSD was already in commercial decline. I bought a Linn streaming system in 2009 and DSD was never even mentioned. Since then they have recorded in 32/384 (I think) and issued in PCM formats up to 24/192.

As mentioned earlier, Linn, a significant and pioneering streaming manufacturer who own a record label that recorded in DSD, still decided largely not to adopt native DSD and some players cannot play a DSD file at all.

There is almost no need for anyone issuing DSD releases to release it in PCM as well. Most streamers can convert a DSD file to PCM, Linn is probably a rare exception and it may be possible to do it at the server.

Audio file formats are different forms of compression, all differing in quality the listener will experience on the receiving end. Programs used to process audio files are called audio codecs, which compress audio for transmitting data and decompress it when the data is received.

The speed of audio codecs is measured in bitrate (kbps), or thousands of bits processed per second. This number can vary even within the same audio format. Typically, the lower the bitrate, the smaller the audio file. It can come at the cost of more data lost in audio compression, which reduces the sound quality.

Each audio format is either compressed or uncompressed. Uncompressed audio, which includes WAV, AIFF, and DSD file types, means the data remains the same size from the transmission to the receiving end.

The AAC format, short for Advanced Audio Coding, is similar to MP3 and is generally better for streaming over mobile devices. AAC provides enhanced audio quality even at the same bit rate. Due to its versatility, it's the default audio format for many devices, such as iPhones and Android phones, and apps like Apple Music (formerly iTunes) and YouTube.

Because it retains all the original audio data, many audiophiles and music enthusiasts use ALAC. It offers a smaller file size than uncompressed formats like WAV or AIFF while maintaining the same sound quality.

If you want to archive an audio collection, ALAC is a good option. It ensures that even if the original physical sources (like CDs) are lost or damaged, the digital files retain the full audio quality.

An M4A file extension is for audio files encoded with advanced audio coding (AAC), which is lossy compression. It's part of the MPEG-4 multimedia standard and offers better sound quality than MP3 files at the same bitrate.

The DSD uses 1-bit samples at 2.8224 MHz, 64 times the CD's 44.1 kHz sample rate. Because of its 1-bit depth, DSD recordings can only represent two amplitude values, but the high sampling rate lets it reproduce audio frequencies up to half the sampling rate accurately.

DSD was mainly used for SACDs, which were aimed at providing higher sound quality than traditional CDs. Some specialty stores sell DSD files, but only to cater to audiophiles who want high-resolution music. 152ee80cbc
