Having failed to kill Sarah Connor, Skynet decides to send a terminator (the T-1000 model) back to kill John Connor as a child (Edward Furlong) while his mother is being held in the mental institution. The future John sends back a second T-800 terminator (still Arnold Schwarzenegger, but this time programmed to be a good guy) to protect his younger self. Young John and the new terminator break Sarah Connor out of the mental hospital.

The three heroes decide to try to stop Judgment Day by teaming up with Miles Dyson (Joe Morton), the lead scientist on the project to reverse-engineer the 1984 terminator. Together, they destroy the Cyberdyne technology and the original terminator, though Miles is killed in the process. Sarah and the T-800 Terminator kill the T-1000 model and then the T-800 model sacrifices himself so no robot components will be left to possibly kickstart Skynet.

In the past, death-row inmate Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) arranges to donate his body to science after he is executed. Meanwhile, Judgment Day occurs in 2004, and John Connor (Christian Bale) becomes a soldier in the resistance. John discovers a facility where computers are experimenting on humans to create a terminator. That facility is destroyed, but Wright, who was turned into a human-terminator hybrid after his execution, emerges from the rubble.

Fast-forward to 2022. A terminator from the future (Gabriel Luna) arrives in Mexico City to kill Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) for unknown reasons. A human who has been augmented with terminator technology and fights for the resistance, Grace (Mackenzie Davis), protects Dani. However, this new terminator can turn itself into two terminators and is just about to overtake Dani and Grace when Sarah Connor (a modern-day Linda Hamilton) arrives to save them.

Sarah reveals that she receives mysterious text messages from the same number telling her the timing and location of a new terminator dropping from the sky, so she can destroy them one by one. Grace figures out where the messages are coming from, and she, Sarah and Dani travel from Mexico to Texas in order to locate the sender. They find the T-800 living in the house. He tells them that after he killed killed young John Connor, he settled down, built a family and developed a conscience. He also discovered that he could feel when a Terminator rips a hole in the space-time continuum and sends Sarah their locations to give her purpose.

The plot of Terminator 2: Judgment Day follows Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) as she attempts to protect her son John (Edward Furlong) from a new terminator T-1000 (Robert Patrick). In the first film, Sarah had been told by a time-traveling soldier (Arnold Schwarzenegger) that her son would someday be humanity's savior from a computer-controlled Armageddon. As such, Sarah has become a fierce warrior who educates John in survival tactics and battle strategies. However, they must now outrun and outwit an advanced T-1000 terminator sent back in time to kill him.

The scene in Terminator 2: Judgment Day where Cyberdyne engineer Miles Dyson's home is located has become iconic. In the movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, the T-800 terminator, visits Dyson's home and proves his non-human status through an incredible display of strength, taking place at a private residence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California.

Nearly 10 years have passed since Sarah Connor was targeted for termination by a cyborg from the future. Now her son, John, the future leader of the resistance, is the target for a newer, more deadly terminator. Once again, the resistance has managed to send a protector back to attempt to save John and his mother Sarah.

The film starts out well enough, with a good twenty-minutes showing the yet another presentation of Judgment Day (we have now seen Judgment Day onscreen almost as often as we've seen Bruce Wayne's parents get shot) and a look at the night when John Connor's rebellion won the war against the machines but failed to stop a terminator from traveling to 1984. On one hand, it's the kind of "explain and show everything" filmmaking that thinks it's mimicking Batman Begins but really is mimicking a Saw sequel.

If the notion of our heroes hopping through time shows promise, don't get your hopes up. The film does basically nothing with the time jump, with the film leaping into the future and then getting involved with the same "caught by police, chased by a terminator" shtick that wouldn't look out of place in any era. The action scenes are efficient but perfunctory and dull, with many of them doing little to progress the story beyond offering trailer-friendly beats. There is nothing in terms of scale or entertainment value that equals any of the big chase scenes from the four prior installments.

Heck, even when Shrek The Final Chapter played that game it was about Shrek coming to terms with an unplanned life (it was Greenburg for kids), but Clarke and Courtney's would-be "Ew, I would never fall in love with him!" courtship doesn't exist for any other thematic purpose. The second half of the film seems to make up rules about time travel and/or changing the future as it goes along, ending in a boring skirmish in a boring office building that amounts to characters yelling at holograms while terminators fight each other.

The sequel to the 1984 film, sees Schwarzenegger not as a killer, but as a protector of future resistance leader John Connor (Edward Furlong). Another more advanced terminator, the T-1000, played by Robert Patrick, is sent back in time to kill John to ensure the machines' victory.
