I still remember the sweet apple turnover I came out there to avenge. I was only two bites deep before that disgusting monster, Bopso, took it away. It was my last one.

I made a vow to hunt down the beast myself. But in coming out there, I fear I had discovered something far worse.

I'm not strong. I'm only a liver. So of course, I crafted a spear. I planned on leaving those woods with Bopso's head at the end.

In the forest, I survived for weeks off of acorns and bugs. Honestly, it was pretty gross. Probably didn't need to eat the bugs. Could've ate more acorns.

But anyway, as you can imagine, I was crazy hungry. There was no sign of Bopso, and no sign of food to lure Bopso out with.

Wandering the woods started to feel aimless. Was it still worth it? Eventually, I decided the answer was no, and prepared to go home.

On my way out, I caught a glimpse of someone. A cat with no face. Behind her, I thought I saw... Bopso!?

No. I must've been delirious. Upon closer inspection, it wasn't Bopso at all. It was the completely-unrelated Bepsi, who isn't to be confused for Bopso, and has nothing to do with Bopso.

Quickly, the idea of going home was drowned out by a new hope. There MUST have been some food between the two of them! All I had to do was ask for help!

Then, Bopso would be lured out, get speared, and I would be on my sweet merry way home with a new plaque for my mantle.

But that isn't what happened.

Bepsi and the cat must've been as eager to leave as I was, because I lost sight of them faster than I could blink. I couldn't just let them get away!

I ran to look for them. I shouted. I saw them, but I must've scared them, because they ran, too. They must've thought I was a monster. I lost them again.

I kept running. I was so exhausted, I could barely feel my gallbladder legs.

Hope dwindled. I could hardly make anything out in the darkness, and I LOVE making out in the dark. My searching became fruitless.

My legs gave out, and I collapsed on the grass.

Fine, I decided. I'd give up and go home as soon as I regained my strength. I lied there for a while.

Until I heard something.

It was incredible. A voice like silk. I heard it.

I heard its beautiful song. It was unlike anything. The most enrapturing sound in the world. It could have lulled me to sleep.

Instead, it gave me the strength to stand. The voice was too far. I wanted to hear it better. I had to get closer.

Was this voice from Bepsi? The cat? Was it coming from a campsite?

Hope came back to me. I was on my way to find help, with this wonderful song as my guide! Please, don't stop singing!

I followed the voice deep into the forest. I didn't recognize the area at all.

The foliage became so lush. I started tripping over rocks.

Through the darkness, I saw a welcoming orange glow. I thought it was a campfire. I got closer.

And then I saw its eyes. Its big, square, fiery eyes. Was this some kind of spirit in a tree?

Music seemed to pour out of its eyeholes. It didn't even have a mouth.

Standing right in front of it, I noticed something at my feet. Those rocks were never rocks at all. They were beets!

Fantastic beets! Glorious beets! A whole field of them! Bopso would be lured to these for sure!

I was still tired, but this friendly spirit had handed me the solution to all of my problems, including a place to rest.

In spite of the chilling woods, the tree emanated a comforting heat. I sat and leaned against it. Its warmth was like a blanket. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the music.

So many beets. Flourishing and healthy. Why hadn't Bopso devoured them yet? Had she not discovered them?

A cold wind blew. When I shivered... the tree hugged me! How surprised was I when its roots playfully wrapped around me! I wasn't cold anymore.

I was still hungry. Though not appetizing, I thought I could eat a beet.

When I tried to move, the roots got tighter. I told it to let go. I struggled. I couldn't reach my spear. I couldn't move at all.

Its song wavered as it focused on keeping me in its grasp, but remained loud enough to drown out my cries.

I felt the earth open beneath me. Its roots, abnormally strong, gripped and pulled me in. I thought we were friends. I couldn't help but feel betrayed when it buried me alive.

I tried to fight back, but I'm only a liver! All hope faded as I lost sight of that inviting orange glow, and was pulled deep beneath the soil.

There was nothing I could do. Is that all I was meant to be? Fertilizer? For beets!?

In my last effort to get loose, my leg made contact with something firm. A beet?

I felt around, trying to identify the object. It wasn't until I touched the teeth that I realized why I never found Bopso.

There was nothing left to do but to let the muffled voice sing me to sleep.

And that's my story. Thanks for letting me up on Open Mic Night. I'm gonna go find my personal heaven and roll around.

What? No, I don't want to duet with you. Hey, wait a minute, that's weird...

That monster looked a LOT like you, but... filled with much more malice!
