I am Beomyun Kim, a Ph.D. candidate in Economics at Iowa State University, specializing in public economics, applied microeconomics, and taxation. My research uses quasi-experimental methods and high-frequency data to study how individuals and markets respond to policy changes.
My job market paper, “Taxing the Sweet Tooth: The Differential Impact of Large Sales Tax Changes,” examines the staggered removal of sales tax exemptions on soda and candy across five U.S. jurisdictions. This is the first study to comprehensively analyze the effects of sales tax exemption terminations on beverage and snack markets across multiple jurisdictions with staggered adoption, demonstrating that the magnitude of tax effects depends critically on product characteristics and tax rate changes, with important implications for the design of health-related tax policy.
I am on the 2025–2026 job market. My CV is available here.
