One of the great things about EvolveSMS is all the configuration options it offers. Now that we've seen how easy it is to use let's discuss what sets EvolveSMS apart from Messenger. The two most important aspects I will focus on is Visual Settings and Notification Settings as they are limited or non-existent in Messenger. With Visual Settings, you can change the look and style of the app, including text size for improved readability, modify the backgrounds and/or theme, and select a custom picture for each of your contacts. BlackBerry users looking to set individual LED and notifications for their contacts can find all this and more under the Notification Settings. EvolveSMS lets you customize the popup reply dialog box, enable quick text notifications, set the notification, LED, and vibration options, or set individual notifications for specific contacts. To set an individual notification for a particular contact, all you have to do is choose a contact, select an LED color and pattern, and pick a notification icon.

What this means is, you can swipe left to see a page for weather and your daily agenda, and swipe again to go straight into your text messages. Being able to have separate pages for texts and Twitter in full view is certainly more convenient than launching each app individually.

You can send photos with Hello, and the app recently added a GIF feature, where you can record a short GIF with your camera and send it to one or more of your contacts. The only downside of this feature is that the camera viewfinder in the app is just a tiny circle next to the text field, and it's hard to see what you're recording.

Other features include actionable notifications that allow you to reply or mark a message as read without opening the app. You can also send free text messages to your friends who also use Hello, a feature that's still in beta.

Textra is great if you like a lot of customization options in your apps. For each of your contacts, or just a few, you get to pick the notification icon color and alert tone that plays when you get a new message. That means you can tell, at a glance, the difference between a text from mom and your best friend. You can also pick the colors for the chat bubbles in your conversations, and there are app three themes; white, dark, and black.

Another great feature is the Textra has a pop-up widget that appears with every new text, and you can reply from any screen. If you don't like the quick reply widget, you can turn it off in settings.

Not to be ignored, Google's video and instant messaging app can also handle your text messages too, and you can switch between chatting over your data connection and sending an SMS message within a thread. It's a great choice if you already use Hangouts on the Web.

The only downside is that the app often automatically signs you into your Google account when you open the app, which will show you as "online" to people using Hangouts on the Web. You can sign out of your account to only send text messages, but the app is better suited for people who want to send both SMS and instant messages.

Klinker Apps, the makers of the Sliding Messaging app have dropped two new additions in the Google Play Store this morning. One of the apps is for Twitter and the other for text messaging. The apps are called Talon for Twitter and EvolveSMS, with the former being $1.99 and the latter being free of charge. Both are sitting at version 1.0 and with support for devices running Android 4.0 or later.

The Talon Twitter app is also offering a few themes, custom text sizes, support for emoji and an in-app browser. All in all, the app is feature rich. Some of the remaining goodies include a widget for the main timeline, a do not disturb mode, night mode, the ability to customize text sizes and in-line viewing of YouTube thumbnails as well as Twitter and Instagram pictures. The app also supports portrait and landscape views as well as smartphones and tablets.

Shifting over to EvolveSMS and we find an app that looks to replace your current default messaging app. As both of these are from the same developer, some of the features may sound a bit familiar. For example, EvovleSMS also has support for different themes as well as a night mode. EvolveSMS integrates Facebook and Google+ cover photos, and Facecook contact photos.

Aside from no one really liking being told what software they have to use, the change was also a bit unsettling. The SMS tool is one of the most basic, reliable and unchanged features of any phone, with even the most backward of tech users usually able to work out how to send a simple text message.

Plenty of customisation options await in this Android SMS app, with Hello SMS letting users choose if they want a standard notification or the entire screen to light up when messages arrive. Plus there's a night mode layout option with a dark background to supposedly save your eyes and battery when texting late.

Still, beneath the clunky layout there are absolutely stacks of features in Handcent, with this texting app letting users add doodles to messages as image files, attach screen captures of the phone's display, spellcheck messages before sending and, if you have a clear non-regional accent, input text via Google's speech-to-text tools.

Being able to send short, written texts via mobile phones has clearly advanced communication in certain respects. And the greatest benefit of texting it that it allows you to communicate instantly with other people wherever you are, without interrupting them in a way that a call would.
