Dr. Bass is currently a research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles. He collaborates with a group of climate scientists at the Center for Climate Science to investigate how climate change has and may continue to impact floods, droughts, and other hazards. He is passionate about integrating the climate sciences, statistics and AI, and observational data to produce new insights and valuable information associated with the risk of a changing climate.
Benjamin earned his Ph.D. at Rice University in 2017 in Water Resources Engineering. During his Ph.D. he developed a multi-flood hazard risk and forecast system. This was achieved by developing a high-fidelity based machine learning emulator of coastal and inland flooding. From 2020 to present, Benjamin has performed research at the University of California, Los Angeles. He served as the lead hydrologist California's 5th Climate Assessment data production effort, and led the hydrology effort for the 5th climate assessment of Los Angeles. He has been involved in a variety of research activities, including data production of hydroclimate projections, climate change attribution studies, and adaptation under deep uncertainty.
Related to Benjamin's research efforts, he has collaborated and partnered with several national agencies (e.g. DOE, NCAR), stakeholders (e.g. LADWP, California State Water Board), and university experts in the hydroclimate sciences. He has served as a research mentor for undergraduate and graduate students, and when available, he teaches courses at UCLA such as Climate Adaptation Solutions.
