I am a Professor of Finance and hold the MSA Charitable Trust Chair in Finance at the Massey University Business School. I am also the Research Director of the School of Accounting, Economics, and Finance at Massey University and an Honorary Professor at the University of Newcastle. I am focused on research that can make a difference to industry practice. My research interests include long-term stock returns and retirement planning, factors influencing stock returns, the cost of capital, and quantitative approaches to portfolio management, transaction cost and liquidity measurement, and exchange-traded funds. 


My research has been published in internationally respected academic journals, such as the Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Banking and Finance, and journals with a practitioner focus, such as the Financial Analysts Journal. I have also had my work accepted by each of the top three finance conferences: American Finance Association (AFA), Western Finance Association (WFA), and European Finance Association (EFA)


My research has generated widespread interest. I am currently ranked in the top 0.1% of authors on the international working paper website SSRN (based on downloads of my papers), and my work has been discussed in numerous newspapers and investment blogs. I am a two-time winner of the NZX Research Report of the Year Award at the Annual INFINZ Awards and also the Boyle, Lally, and Rose Prize for the Best Overall Paper at the New Zealand Finance Colloquium. I have also won numerous other prizes and awards. I also serve on the editorial board of a number of journals. 


I have consulted to public companies including the New Zealand Exchange Ltd and Fletcher Building Ltd, private companies such as Grant Thornton, and Smiths City in a range of areas including commodity risk management, executive stock option valuation, and cost of capital. I have also advised the Massey University Foundation, and the New Zealand Commerce Commission. 


I am also an Independent Academic Consultant and Member of the Investment Committee for Consilium Ltd, which is a company that provides world-class portfolio and technology solutions to financial advisors, and I am an Independent Academic Advisor to the NZ$45bn+ ACC Investment Fund.


I have governance experience in a range of settings and have expertise in applying ESG principles from a board perspective. I have completed the  University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School "Leadership in the 21st Century" and the Australian Institute of Directors "An Introduction to ESG for Boards" course.
