History of Hostels

Hosteling began in 1909 in Germany by Richard Schirrmann, a school teacher. He wanted his students to experience learning outside the classroom, however, there were no affordable accommodations available. He created the first hostel and hosteling quickly spread with the formation of the International Youth Hostel Foundation. During WWII the hostel movement was brought to the USA.

Hostels offer a cross-cultural exchange for young people while providing affordable accommodations that are clean and budget oriented, as well as a sociable environment.

We at Belknap House Hostel hope you enjoy your stay in the beautiful area of the Lakes Region and experience all the area offers.
