Places worth visiting in Minsk

Independence Avenue

It's the main thoroughfare and one of the most significant streets in Minsk, Belarus. Stretching for about 15 kilometers, this grand boulevard is the heart of the city's social, cultural, and commercial life.

Independence Square

It serves as a venue for mass events and is a beloved spot for relaxation among Minsk residents. Besides leisurely strolls and sitting on benches, the square houses an underground three-story shopping center, offering various shopping, dining options, and entertainment activities.

Island of Tears (Ostrov Slyoz)

A touching memorial dedicated to Belarusian soldiers who perished in the Afghanistan War. The Island of Tears features a striking chapel surrounded by a weeping willow sculpture, evoking a powerful emotional response.

Victory Square

Victory Square holds immense significance for the people of Minsk and all Belarusians, serving as a symbol of the heroic deeds of their ancestors during the Great Patriotic War. The centerpiece is the Victory Monument an imposing obelisk. The square frequently hosts mass events, including celebrations on Victory Day, May 9.

The Minsk Gates

The Minsk Gates, built in 1953 in the Stalinist Empire style, are two eleven-story buildings and a symbol of the city, located on Railway Square. Pay attention to the clock on the right tower, a trophy brought from Germany after World War II. They blend harmoniously into the historical location of the former wooden towers of Zamtishcha, the main castle of the city.

Minsk Town Hall

The first Minsk Town Hall, built in the early 17th century, was known for its clock, which people used to check the time. Reconstructed in the neoclassical style in the 18th century. By the mid-19th century it was demolished. The current building is a reconstruction of the historical structure. The present building serves as the Minsk City Museum, showcasing the history of the city and Belarus.

The National Library

An architectural marvel and the third-largest library in the world, the National Library building in Minsk has a unique rhombicuboctahedron shape. Today, it houses around 10 million copies of books, newspapers, documents, etc., and regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures, and public readings. It also offers stunning panoramic views of the city from its observation deck.

October Street

During the 19th century, October Street thrived as an industrial center, housing metalworking factories, tanneries, distilleries, and various other manufacturing facilities. While some industrial architecture from that time remains, many of the enterprises ceased to exist. Gradually, October Street evolved into a cultural hub in Minsk, attracting tourists who come to admire the numerous graffiti art adorning the once gray and drab factory buildings.

The Upper Town (Verhni horod)

The upper town began to be built up in the 16th century as the new center of Minsk, after the city suffered from fires and raids of the Crimean Tatars.

The Belarusian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life (18 km from Minsk)

This complex presents authentic structures dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Interestingly, these buildings were sourced from various locations, collected by a team of historians and ethnographers over several years. Inside these structures, the artifacts of bygone eras are abundantly displayed, most of which are genuine items from the past. "Khatyn" Memorial Complex (60 km from Minsk)

The Khatyn Memorial Complex commemorates a tragic chapter in Belarusian history. On March 22, 1943, a German officer's death during a partisan attack led to the brutal massacre of the village of Khatyn's inhabitants. The majority, including women, children, and the elderly, were locked in a barn and burned alive. The memorial complex features poignant sculptures, with the most notable being a father holding his deceased son, defiantly refusing to bow to the enemy.
