Cheap and reliable may not be easy to come by in a web hosting service, but I have come across several companies that strike a good balance between the two.
This article isn’t about extremely cheap ($1 a month or so) web hosting services. Most of those are extremely limited in terms of server resources and have overcrowded servers that may not reliably handle anything other than a static HTML site.
This review will be more about affordable web hosting solutions that offer decent performance for dynamic websites, more specifically, WordPress websites.
These are some of the most reliable providers among the low-cost WordPress web hosts I’ve discovered as of 2023.
Ethernet Servers is a lesser-known company that I stumbled upon while I was scouting the Web Hosting Talk forums for cheap web hosts.
I’ve been using Ethernet Servers’ shared hosting for one of my WordPress sites for a few years now, and I can certainly say that this is hands down the best of the cheapest web hosting providers I’ve used to date -- excellent stability, uptime and support.
Unlike other cheap hosts, they aren’t stingy with server resources. For the price you pay, you get generous amounts of resources with solid performance for a low-traffic WordPress site.
And the best thing about Ethernet Servers (in terms of pricing) is that you can pay month-to-month without being charged extra. You don’t have to commit to a three-year plan to take advantage of a “special” discount like many other hosts do.
The support team has been very helpful and prompt in my experience. Live chat may not be available 24/7 but they usually answer tickets fairly quickly.
Hostinger is another solid provider of cheap web and WordPress hosting where you get a good bang for your buck. Their plans include several free features that other hosts charge you extra for.
I have an account with Hostinger that I use to host some side-hustle sites, and everything has been going great so far. The support team usually responds quickly via live chat, but it’s not always instantaneous (sometimes you may have to wait a few hours to get a response).
They don’t have cPanel -- bummer, but their hPanel has a simple interface with all the essential tools you’ll need to manage your sites, including SSL, email, file manager, phpMyAdmin, and WordPress management (installation, updates, staging, etc.)
Namecheap is primarily a domain registrar where I’ve been keeping many of my domain names. They have competitive prices and quick live chat support that’s available around the clock.
While I haven’t personally tried their hosting service yet, I’ve been hearing a lot of positive opinions about it. Not many other companies can give you the same technical features with the same level of support at the same low price Namecheap offers.
But there is one major drawback in my opinion: They don’t offer completely free SSL, but rather you get a free PositiveSSL certificate for the first year only, after which it renews at the regular price of $13.20 per year. If you’re going to host multiple sites and you need an SSL certificate for each, these may end up costing you more than the hosting service itself.
DreamHost has been around since the beginning of my online ventures about 20 years ago. They’ve passed the test of time and maintained a solid reputation as a reliable and affordable web hosting provider.
They offer normal shared web hosting as well as managed WordPress hosting (called DreamPress). The latter option provides better performance and is more aimed at small business, resource-intensive and/or high-traffic sites.
Let’s just talk about the more affordable option, i.e. shared hosting. It comes in two plans: Starter and Unlimited. The Starter shared hosting plan is the cheapest option offered by DreamHost at $4.95 per month on a monthly billing cycle (only for the first three months and then it’s $7.99/month).
So, what’s the catch here? Well, it only allows you to host one website and it doesn’t come with email. You can add email accounts at a price of $1.99 per month for each mailbox.
Another shortcoming is that it’ll cost you an extra $3 per month to get some advanced security features (e.g. malware scanning), whereas other hosts include this as a free standard feature.
FastComet got my attention as one of the highest-rated web hosting companies on Trustpilot, so I decided to give it a try, and indeed, it turned out to be one of the good picks I’ve made.
Just to add one more positive review to the many they already have, I give them a thumbs-up for technical features, uptime, security, and most important of all, their knowledgeable and responsive support agents.
FastComet’s shared cloud hosting is a good choice if you are starting a new WordPress website on a limited budget. Their plans are affordable and include everything you will likely need.
Their introductory prices are massively discounted. You can sign up for a 1-3 year plan and take advantage of the one-time 80% discount they give to new customers. But don’t forget to take note of the regular renewal price that is displayed on the checkout page.
