Winter has come to the Canadian Rockies. I love winter in the mountains! Although it's cold, the visual beauty inherent in winter is an absolute dream to photograph. Stormy days are plentiful during the winter months. Conditions filled with snow flurries, pockets of wintery light, and overcast cloud drama become the norm for the landscape photographer. I used to be filled with disappointment when I'd make the trip out into the mountains for a day of landscape photography only to be greeted by stormy skies. Now, I embrace these days, as they are, in fact, some of my favoured conditions for photographing landscape scenes during the winter months. Here are a few ideas on how you can embrace stormy days and still capture beautiful landscape images.

It's worth your time and effort to try a long exposure during those overcast and stormy days. On this occasion, Moraine Lake was socked in with clouds lacking dimension and fog. A long exposure resulted in beautiful sky drama that was otherwise mostly flat. Don't be afraid to dodge and burn your sky in post-processing to enhance sky texture and dimension. It's an effective and powerful technique when faced with skies that lack textured drama.

The night sky is magical! Clear skies are not mandatory for a beautiful night image. Look for locations where you can balance the cool blue of the cloudy night alongside warmth, like this stunning little boathouse at Lake Louise. Stars do not dominate the night sky in this image, but the mixture of cool and warm colours are visually pleasing.

Don't let stormy weather deter you from doing what you love! Get out there and photograph even when the weather is stormy. There's always beauty to find, and you never know what you might come across when you embrace conditions that might not be ideal!

I've helped many now happy photographers leave behind their frustration and disappointment with their photos. My proven step-by-step systems will have you creating better landscape images too!

First runner-up was Vu Trung Huan's enchantingly beautiful "Tea Hills," taken at the Long Coc tea hills in Phu Tho Province, Vietnam. Maja Kralijik won second runner-up for "Monster," a photograph of a shelf cloud in Umag, Croatia.

Runner up was Emma Rose Karsten's "Surf's Up," taken with an iPhone XS in the parking lot of Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Missouri, in June this year. It just goes to show that you don't always need an expensive camera setup to capture stunning images.

Landscape photography is largely dictated by the weather you experience out in the field. Many times, we don't get the conditions we hoped for, which can be especially challenging after investing time and money into a photography trip. These are five things you can do the next time you're in unfavorable conditions to walk away with great images regardless of the weather.

One of the most satisfying experiences in landscape photography is when everything aligns: you're at a beautiful location, the clouds are lighting on fire with light, and you're patiently set up with a beautiful composition ready to be captured. The reality is this rarely happens, and most of the time, conditions can be challenging, which can leave us feeling discouraged. Even worse, it could leave us returning from an expensive outing feeling like we didn't get anything we'd hoped for.

I recently spent over two weeks photographing the winter wonderland of northern Norway and was continuously challenged with fast changing weather and dull light. Throughout that time I came up with these five tips you can use to maximize your time and effort when conditions aren't great and still end up with amazing images.

Sometimes, this light can be really dramatic, even in the afternoon. All the images above were taken during fast-moving overcast days when light would poke through sporadically. The key is just being ready when that fleeting light shines into your scene.

I found this spot while meandering around the famous town of Reine in Lofoten. It's a shot that's assuredly been taken many times, but what caught my attention was this "wave" of snow framing the bottom half of the image. I parked here and watched the light change for over an hour. Coastal weather tends to change more rapidly than average in my experience, and thankfully, I had time to kill considering my entire trip was dedicated to photography, which I highly recommend if you can get away with it.

My patience paid off when the clouds started to open up just enough to reveal this iconic mountain scene of Reine. I even captured a bit of energy with a touch of blown snow coming into my lens. This ended up being one of my favorite images from the entire trip.

As always, thanks for reading, and I would love to hear if you have any other tips that I didn't include in here that you've found success with in your adventures. Feel free to share a few of your own images in the comments below as well. I look forward to seeing them.

Alex Armitage has traveled the world to photograph and film some of the most beautiful places it has to offer. No matter the location, perfecting it's presentation to those absent in the moment is always the goal; hopefully to transmute the feeling of being there into a visual medium.

I first became interested in storms when I was a boy growing up in Texas, the only state in the US that experiences tornadoes, hurricane and blizzards on a regular basis. I built a scale model of a supercell thunderstorm inside a clear, plexiglass box using cotton and a light bulb for lightning, the entry that won first place in the weather category at our local science fair. I got permission from my mother to climb onto our roof and build a weather station. And, when I was 12, I took my first storm photo. A big, fat bolt of lightning shot on a Kodak rangefinder through the window in our kitchen.

In 1993, I founded StormStock, a collection of premium storm imagery including lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes and other beautiful and dramatic weather. You can see some of my work in a short film I made titled "Wakinyan" (Thunder Spirit).

Finally, whether you go outside to shoot storm photos, or stay safely inside, you should be weather aware when storms are nearby. Get a NOAA Weather Alert Radio or a good weather alert app for your smart phone. If you live in an area where tornadoes are frequent, consider purchasing a manufactured EF5-rated storm shelter or build your own using free FEMA shelter design plans.

By definition, weather is the state of the atmosphere, and that's a tough subject to capture. But the visual manifestations of the states of the atmosphere? Now you're talking photography. Weather phenomena are often beautiful, dramatic and eminently photogenic subjects.

"I think of optical phenomena as the visual ways in which weather conditions are presenting themselves to us to be photographed," Jim says. "They are essentially light interacting with water, the atmosphere and particles in the atmosphere. What I love about these phenomena is that they're very soothing and inspiring. I walk away feeling energized and hopeful."

Rainbows might be the most popular weather-related subjects for photographers. In Jim's pictures, and in yours, they can be the main subject or part of the background, adding color, shape and eye-catching interest to a landscape that stands strong on its own.

GOES-16 and GOES-17, also known as GOES-East and GOES-West respectively, provide beautiful images of Earth. However, what you see on your television, computer, and mobile device are digital representations of the data these satellites capture, not actual photographs or videos. So how are these images created?

A lot goes on behind the scenes to create and deliver this colorful imagery, but these enhancements result in more than just a pretty picture. This vivid imagery conveys complex environmental information from large satellite datasets to highlight the presence and evolution of important meteorological phenomena like fog, dust, fire hot spots and smoke, snow/ice, volcanic ash plumes, cloud properties, air mass temperature and moisture characteristics, and more. Adding color, combining data from multiple ABI channels, and looping the images provide critical information to help meteorologists quickly discern the information they need to issue timely forecasts and warnings.

Dark Sky is one of our favorite weather apps. The app lets you know when it's going to rain down to the minute. In our experience, it's incredibly accurate. Plus its user interface is absolutely gorgeous.

Weather Neue is a pretty, minimalistic weather app. It displays the current temperature in a big, bold font, leaving little room for other information. Dig through the options to get information on wind speed, extended forecasts, etc.

Weather Underground is useful because the app focuses on local areas. So, in addition to providing you with a 10-day forecast and current temperatures, you can take advantage of over 24,000 personal weather stations, which report the most localized weather conditions.

There are plenty of reasons why this lens is still a great purchase today, eight years after its original release. For starters, the image quality is beautiful. I always joke about this lens that you could take a picture of trash with it, and it would still look great.

Satellite images of Earth at night have been a curiosity for the public and a tool of fundamental research for at least 25 years. They have provided a broad, beautiful picture, showing how humans have shaped the planet and lit up the darkness.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a different part of the world? What would the weather be like? What kinds of animals would you see? Which plants live there? By investigating these questions, you are learning about biomes.

Outdoor photography is highly dependent on the weather, which can often be a little bit unpredictable. Depending on where you live you might be enjoying sunshine on the snowy streets, enduring a storm, sloshing through rain puddles, or basking in the heat of the desert. e24fc04721
