Woden Firing 42
This firing is planned for Saturday 12th October 2024, with a preheat starting the day before.
Local potters are invited to apply for space in the chamber for their own pots. Loading will start after refurbishment of the firebox bars, in early October.
There is a Facebook Event, which you can visit at this link :-
This image is part of Bill's effort to fill the kiln, every birthday for decades he has thrown 25kg of clay, cut into the lumps numbering his age!
These are the large props bought to replace the broken firebars in the fireboxes, the timber fuel is thrown onto these, where it burns until the embers fall down onto the layer below, then the ashes fall into the bottom.
Thank you to the Acme Batt Co for supplying them.
These are normal props used to hold up the kiln shelves. They have been dipped in batt wash (China Clay 60%, Alumina Hydrate 40%) to protect them against the aggressive ash deposits. The other end will be dipped and then they are fired in the electric kiln to bake it on, before being used in Woden.
Here are the newly installed firebars.
The timber fuel is carefully placed (!) on top of these bars, and never just thrown into the firebox through the door, because that might damage them!
The first few pots have been loaded, leaving space all round to allow the flames and hot air to circulate through the chamber.
