What is Hotel Situated-Learning Board Game?

Hotel Situated Learning Board Game is a tabletop board game that is designed based on needs analysis.

The context of the game is the replication of the hotel front office environment where players act as hotel front office staff responding to the hotel guests through game elements. According to a set of rules, all board game elements can be moved, replaced, or eliminated from the game. Players are encouraged to try different ways to respond to the guests to learn, practice, and gain more game points to win the game. The Hotel Situated Learning Board Game design is based on Burrett and Davidson (2017)’s board game design using hotel situated learning.

The board game is divided into five parts: player experience, board game mechanics, rules, victory conditions, and components.

1) Player experiences: Designing the experience the player has while playing the game. This stage included context and content. The context in this game is the hotel front office, and the content of the game is English oral communication that happens in the hotel guest cycle. Players will gain points while responding to the situations and act like colleagues in the hotel front office.

2) Board game mechanics: Based on situated learning, collaboration-related mechanics are focused. Players will take turns following the game process, responding to the hotel guests’ situations. The voting system will be used together with the player judge to give feedback to each response.

3) Rules: A set of rules is developed according to the game mechanics. This allowed players to peer assess their performance,
give feedback, and fix errors or mistakes. The regular play included collecting cards, performing actions, solving tasks, and discussion.

4) Victory conditions: What indicates how to win the game is a score point players receive.
The points come from the completed tasks that all players approved.

5) Components: The components included the board, cards, characters, and tokens.

The rule of this game is placed in four layers: Structural Rules, Setup, Regular Play, and Exceptions (Burrett & Davidson, 2017).
