About me

Biswanath Dutta is an Associate Professor at the Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) of the Computer and Communication Sciences Division of the Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore (ISI BC), India. He holds a Bachelors's degree in Physics (Vidyasagar University, India, 1999) and a Bachelors's degree in Library and Information Science (Vidyasagar University, India, 2000). He holds a master's degree in Library and Information Science from ISI Bangalore (2003) and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Pune (India), in 2010 for his research conducted at ISI Bangalore. The topic of his Ph.D. work was 'Generating semantic information services using semantic web technologies. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) of the University of Trento, Italy (2009-2012). He has worked as a research assistant at the Department of Computer Science, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. He has visited the Interactive Media Lab of the University of Toronto, Canada, and Max Plank Institut Informatics (MPII), Germany. He has actively worked on a European Commission (EU) funded research project ‘LivingKnowledge: LivingKnowledge - Facts, Opinions, and Bias in Time’ (http://livingknowledge-project.eu/). He has worked in ITPAR II and III. Currently, he is handling (as a PI) two research projects funded by Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (for details, visit https://www.isibang.ac.in/~bisu/covid19project.html) and the Indian Council of Scientific Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.  He also provides consultancy services to industries. 

He is a member of several national and international professional organizations, journals, and conferences. He is the Secretary of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) - India Chapter, Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies, Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Journal of Information and Knowledge (Formerly SRELS Journal of Information Management), International Editorial Board Member of BARTOC.org (Basic Register of Thesauri, Ontologies & Classifications) (since 2021 -  )  and many more. He is a review committee member of various peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Some of the notable journals are Springer “Artificial Intelligence Review”; Springer “Knowledge and Information Systems”; SAGE "Journal of Information Science"; IEEE Access; IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics; ASISI&T "Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST)"; Emerald “Journal of Knowledge Management”; Emerald "Data Technologies And Applications (DTAA)"  (formerly “Program”); NISCAIR “Annals of Library and Information Studies”, etc. He is currently serving as a secretary of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) - India Chapter. He has published more than 70 scientific papers in national and international journals and conferences. He has four books to his credit. His current research interests lie in the areas of ontology, metadata, knowledge graph, data science, and semantic technologies. 


Besides the above academic activities, he gets involved in games and sports and cultural programs. He enjoys playing football, badminton, and volleyball. He also enjoys watching both Hollywood and Bollywood movies. He loves visiting places, meeting people, chat on various topics starting from cultural aspects to academics. He is quite active on social networking sites like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
