About me

Dr. Biswanath Dutta is an Associate Professor and former Head of the Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bangalore, India. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Physics and Library & Information Science (LIS), a Master's degree in LIS from ISI, and a Ph.D. in LIS from the University of Pune based on research conducted at ISI Bangalore. His doctoral research focused on Semantic Web technologies and e-Learning.

Dr. Dutta has held international research positions as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI), University of Trento, Italy, and as a Research Assistant at Dalhousie University, Canada. He has also undertaken research visits and collaborations with the Interactive Media Lab at the University of Toronto, Canada, and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPII), Germany.

He has contributed to several national and international research initiatives, including the European Commission-funded project LivingKnowledge: Facts, Opinions, and Bias in Time, and has led multiple projects funded by government agencies and industry. His research interests include Semantic Web, Ontologies, Knowledge Graphs, Linked Data, Metadata, Knowledge Organization, Research Data Management, and Artificial Intelligence applications. He serves on the prestigious international editorial board of BARTOC.org. Dr. Dutta has authored over 100 scholarly publications and four books. He actively supervises research scholars and leads projects in knowledge representation, semantic technologies, and data management.

Dr. Dutta is an active member of numerous national and international professional organizations, journals, and conferences. He serves as the Secretary of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) - India Chapter and is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies. He is also an Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Journal of Information and Knowledge (formerly SRELS Journal of Information Management), an International Editorial Board Member of BARTOC.org (Basic Register of Thesauri, Ontologies & Classifications) since 2021, and has contributed as a review committee member for several prominent journals and conferences, including: Springer “Artificial Intelligence Review”, Springer “Knowledge and Information Systems”, SAGE "Journal of Information Science", IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, ASIS&T "Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST)", Emerald “Journal of Knowledge Management”, Emerald "Data Technologies and Applications (DTAA)" (formerly “Program”), and NISCAIR “Annals of Library and Information Studies”. 

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dutta enjoys engaging in games and sports such as football, badminton, and volleyball. He also likes watching both Hollywood and Bollywood movies and is passionate about visiting new places, meeting people, and discussing a wide range of topics from cultural to academic. He is active on social networking platforms including Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
