Being Present in School

Remember roll call? A teacher reads off a list of names, and each student in attendance dutifully responds, "Present." But being present doesn't always mean we are present. Minds wander, anxiousness arises, to-do lists tap us on the shoulder, and our attention falters.

Mindfulness is a tool for grounding mind and body in the moment. Whether one is engaging in formal meditation, or playing a game that calls upon executive functioning and spatial awareness, the possibilities for establishing mindfulness in a school context are varied, and the research shows that doing so can enrich the lives of students and help support them throughout the day.

This site will provide Activities that can energize and engage students, as well as past issues of our bi-weekly mindfulness and SEL newsletter, The Toolkit, so that folks can access for further information and study regarding mindfulness.
