Ishiyamadera Engi 石山寺縁起

The text of Ishiyamadera Engi, the scroll of the History of Ishiyama-dera Temple, was composed in 1324-26. It contains 33 sections (corresponding to the 33 incarnations of Kannon) in 7 scrolls : the scrolls 5 and 6 were lost and remade at the beginning of the 15th century, the scrolls 7 and 8 were definitely lost. On the 5th scroll, the court painter Awataguchi Takamitsu 粟田口隆光 depicted 2 sugoroku 双六 (backgammon) players in the residence of a courtier named Fujiwara no Kuniyoshi of the Tenji period 天治 (1124-1126).
