Bobrinsky Bucket
Herat, Afghanistan, 1163
Herat, Afghanistan, 1163
The Bobrinsky bronze bucket was commissioned by a rich merchant from Herat (Afghanistan) in 1163. It is decorated with inscriptions and scenes from the court life.
One of these scenes seems to represent two backgammon players.
It was formerly in the collection of Count Alexis Bobrinsky, who headed the Imperial Russian Archaeological Commission years before the revolution and is now preserved in the State Hermitage Museum of Saint-Petersburg.
