Bible Moralisée

The Bible Moralisée is a 13th picture book divided into 3 volumes (Oxford, Bodleian Library MS 270b / Paris, BNF Latin 11560 / London, BL Harley MS 1526-1527) consisting of short biblical passages and related commentaries with moral or allegorical lessons.

One scene of Harley 1527 f. 34v (British Library) depicts backgammon players to illustrate a passage of the gospel according to Saint Luke (chapter XV) : et ibi dissipavit substantiam suam vivendo luxuriose, « and there wasted his substance with riotous living ».
