La Chanson de Roland
1090
1090
Sur tapis blancs s’assoient li baron,
Jouent as tables et as eschecs li viel:
Li jone juvente s’escriment d’espée.
Sus un pin, pres d’une eglantiere,
Un trone out fait tot d’or et de pierre:
Li reis i siet, qui tient dulz France la terre.
On white carpets the barons sit,
The old and wise play tables and chess;
Young youths practice swordplay.
Under a pine, near an eglantine tree,
A throne has been made, all of gold and stone:
There sits the king who rules fair France.
