Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria (Latin for "Institutes of Oratory") is a 12-volume manual on ethics and rhetoric designed for the training of future Roman orators.
This famous anecdote illustrates the prodigious memory of Mucius Scaevola, a celebrated Roman jurist capable of mentally reconstructing an entire game from memory.
Scaevola, having played the game of twelve lines and having been defeated, recalled the entire sequence of the game in his mind while traveling to his country house; having remembered the exact move where he had made a mistake, he returned to the person he had played against, who admitted that it was indeed the case.
