The first time I heard Mes Amis play was at New Year's By The Bay in Belfast. I was blown away. Talent of this calibre should be shouted from the rooftops! If these guys lived in New York or LA, they'd be the toast of the town.
Luckily for us, they're Maine neighbors. Luckier for us, they're coming to play in our front yard. Believe me, my friends. This is a show that is absolutely not to be missed!
Appealing to listeners young and old alike, Mes Amis — led by guitarist, vocalist, and composer Steve Lynnworth — plays an infectious mix of traditional Gypsy, Latin, and American jazz standards along with many of Steve’s original compositions. The insistent rhythms, bouncing bass lines and sweetly intricate melodies are easy on the ears for those unfamiliar with jazz, and yet can stand the scrutiny of an aficionado. As it was so aptly put by Rich Tozier, host of MPBN Radio’s Jazz Tonight, “Who couldn’t like that?”
Steve handles the vocals and much of the lead work. Backing him up are his friends Harry Richter on guitar, Duane Edwards on the upright bass, and master clarinet & sax player, Shane Ellis. Harry (a capable soloist in his own right) provides "La Pompe" — the steady backbeat typical of the style — while Duane delivers an authoritative thump as he holds down the bottom. Steve and Shane have a fantastic time playing together and pushing each other to new heights.
