The Sension5 Conductivity Meter measures conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity and temperature of aqueous solutions.

Displayed values are temperature corrected using the measured sample temperature.

Conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct current. Positive and negative ions in a solution will move to the oppositely charged electrode when an electric charge is applied to the solution, thus conducting current. Temperature affects conductivity because as temperature increases, ions move faster and conduct more current.

Requirements: The Hach Sension5 Conductivity Meter can be used out in the field or in the classroom/laboratory. Data can be saved in the meter and recalled at a later time.

Directions:

The following directions describe how to calibrate and take measurements of conductivity, salinity, and total dissolved solids with the meter. Please see the Hach SensION5 Conductivity Meter Manual for a more detailed explanation of changing the meter setup and storing/recalling entered data points.

1. Connect the conductivity probe to the meter by lining the pins up with the holes in the meter port. The arrow on the blue plug will be on top. Push the blue plus in toward the meter.

2. Turn the meter on using the blue I/O/exit key (located on the upper left side of the keypad). The display will show the software version number, perform initial tests, then move to the reading mode.

3. Set the options using the setup menu. The user may choose options for display lock, temperature units, time, date, temperature correction factor, TDS calculation factor, and reference temperature. Press the SETUP key on the lower right side of the keypad. The arrow icons will be displayed, indicating that additional options are available within the menu. Press the up or down arrow key to scroll the desired option, then press ENTER. Press EXIT to return to reading mode. Refer to the Setup Quick Reference Card for a description of each option.The following lists describe setup number and function:

4. Calibrate the meter. The meter must be calibrated before use. Place the probe in the provided standard. Press the CAL button. Use the arrow keys to select 1000 µS/cm and press ENTER. When the reading is stable, the calibration is automatically stored and the instrument will return to reading mode.

5. Take a reading of TDS, conductivity, or salinity. Place the end of the meter into an aqueous solution. Press the blue READ/enter button. The meter will beep 3 times once the measurement has been taken. To see the measured value of conductivity, salinity, or TDS press the COND, SAL, or TDS buttons, respectively.

6. To store a measurement, press the STORE key after a measurement has been taken. The display will prompt Store Sample#? The question mark will be flashing. Press ENTER to store the reading in that location. Press the arrow key to scroll to another location and press ENTER. Pres RECALL to recall stored measurements. Press RECALL and ERASE to erase measurements.
