The basic premise is that the world is ruled by monkeys and there's a fight to the death to see who's going to be the leader of monkey kind. You control a small army of armed monkey warriors and battle against different contestants to see if you can be the great one. As you progress through the levels, the tribes and contestants you face become increasingly harder.
There are several different monkeys to play with and you can customize them with a staggering 1000 different outfits. The graphics are surprisingly good for such a budget game as are the sound effects and overall soundtrack. The gameplay is pretty addictive too and enhanced by the fact that you can link up with other online players via a Multi-player mode.

The second thing is a few of the cards are overpowered. The Clerical General has an ability where they can heal themselves 2 points. So this quickly can turn into a battle of attrition. I hit you, you heal, I hit you, heal. Rinse and repeat. And the SpiderMonkey solider card is just nutso cray cray, as they get to attack first ALWAYS.. so if you build out your army with Spider Monkeys, unless your opponent can quickly do something (steal a card, etc) you will quickly be dead.

A fierce leader, the Warrior rallies his troops and is always the first to strike. He allows you to bypass the standard 1 soldier per round limit to add additional soldiers to your army. Use this ability strategically and you can quickly change the outcome of any battle.
When launched, the game displays some excellent graphics, offering a simple tutorial to explain the game mechanics. Essentially, monkeys sit on your various keyboard keys. Each turn you can jump to any of the two keys available in any direction. Your goal is to try and kill the monkeys before they kill you. Some keys have special capabilities that affect the other monkeys on the keyboard. Those special keys change each turn. Gameplay takes only a minute to learn, and the variability of the special keys makes playing dependent on luck.
Some players will get into Battle Monkeys by trying all the different monkeys available. Others will buy upgrades (typically spending about $10) to try and gain additional advantages over their opponents. You also can customize the way your monkeys look, although that doesn't affect the game in any way we found. The graphics and soundtrack are excellent, but we did get a bit bored by the basic gameplay after a few minutes. Even after buying some of the special upgrades we didn't get hooked. Battle Monkeys will appeal to some casual gamers, but you are advised to try the free version for a while before purchasing upgrades.

You begin the game by selecting a monkey to play with. When you first start, only one monkey will be available. Once you pick your monkey, you get placed onto the game board with 3 other monkeys. The game board is a bunch of tiles with different icons on them. The icons on the tiles represent the attacks that are available.. You are then given a jump radius that will show you the exact tiles that you are allowed to jump to. Once you jump to a tile, you will use the attack you land on against the other monkeys. The tricky part is that every round, the tiles move down one level. This means that you must anticipate where the attack you want is going to be before you jump there.
In addition to great gameplay, Battle Monkeys also has some other cool features. Once you unlock everything in the game, you will have access to a complete range of monkeys.
