Batik is a fabric that comes with patterns and various motif designs that are intricately designed that we can see almost everywhere in the world today. Usually, the design is originated from a rich symbolic heritage and customary diversity. Batik has been used in a generic term which refers to the process of dyeing fabric by making use of a resist technique and wax to prevent them from absorbing colours.

The pattern of my Batik was inspired by the Malaysian cuisine which is “ketupat”. Ketupat is rice packed inside a diamond-shaped container made from a woven of young coconut leaves. The earliest connection of ketupat with Islamic lebaran tradition is believed to be originated in the 15th-century Sultanate of Demak.

The chosen portion of the design is taken from a hyper realistic drawing of the ketupat itself. Then, I choose the part that has a lot of elements and have a higher potential to get an interesting pattern which is the edges of the “ketupat” is placed on a banana leaf on a plate. After choosing the composition, change it to basic geometry and all the complex lines were simplified into a geometry shape. This is the reason we see curve lines that refer to the ketupat and the straight line refers to the motif on the banana leaf. The technique that I used for this pattern is the repetition technique, or also known as the mirroring technique to get a complete pattern. The principles that I applied in my pattern is rhythm. This principle applied as the repetition of line with different sizes until produces movement in my pattern. Next, the principle that I applied is a symmetry which expresses balanced and harmony in my pattern on the opposite sides of an axis.

Other than that, the organizations that I applied in my pattern is centralized. The reason I choose a centralized organization is there a dominant space about which a number of secondary spaces are grouped in my pattern. We can see it in the middle of the pattern which is the group of space with the center of a red diamond. This organization makes my pattern look balanced and harmonious.

For the colour scheme, I choose the colour based on the art movement which is optical art. Optical art has an element of contrasting colour that produces different visual effect. This is why I choose black white and red colour for my pattern so that it will create effects and rhythm through pattern and line. The colour that I choose also make my pattern look elegance, show a passionate love, and also sincerity.

It is clear that the value of creativity and innovation in heritage cultural arts is at the core of creative industries such as batik art. All parties are also aware that the heritage of the batik industry is able to contribute to the economy, society, and education of the country.
