Batik is a very old form of art even though batik’s true origin remains a mystery until today, despite that, batik got the highest artistic expression from South East Asia. The word batik is thought to be derived from the word ‘ambatik’ which means a cloth with little dots with the suffix ‘tik’ meaning little dot, drop, or point. Nowadays, modern batik is becoming more popular among folks of the world due to its livelier and brighter color application in the form of murals, wall hanging, paintings, household linen and scarves. Batik is priced based on its artwork, craftsmanship and fabric quality.

The pattern of my batik is inspired by one of the cuisines that we always see in Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration which is Lontong. Lontong frequently served with ‘nasi impit’ and ‘sambal’. Lontong is one of the main dishes served during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration beside Rendang and ‘ketupat’. The reason I choose Lontong as my inspiration to create this batik pattern because I want to show how we can create an artistic expression in terms of organic or inorganic design from the food itself. From this batik pattern, I want to show the idea that combining architectural elements can give us exciting batik pattern for the younger generation nowadays to make them appreciate how batik was made and how the elements in the batik are riches with culture and artistic expression.

The motive that I choose is from the middle part of the Lontong in the bowl. I choose the part that contains more lines to create my batik pattern more interesting and unique. The part that I choose contains part of green beans, ‘nasi impit’, tofu and ‘tempe’. Then, I geometricize the part to create a more complex motive then I simplify the pattern to give better visual composition. From this motive, it shows that by using architectural elements too we can create an amazing batik pattern that can help our batik community in the near future.

For this batik pattern, the ordering principle that I choose to use in this batik pattern is symmetry and datum. From this pattern, we can see the axis vertically and horizontally which creates the symmetry order. Meanwhile, the organization that I use is linear organization. We can see the circles create the linear form in this pattern. As for the color scheme, I use the color scheme used in the art deco style. The colors that I use are from the era which uses a lot of striking and bold colors in their art style. The gold color represents luxurious and classy, it is to show the richness of batik culture in our community. As for the sky blue, the purpose I choose this color to create a calm and allay visual in the composition. Lastly, I choose a blue-black color to create contrast between sky blue and gold to make the batik pattern stands out more and give it a better visual appeal.
