“ YUU SAHNG” BATIK

Yuu sahng or also we call it as yee sang is the main dishes for Chinese New Year celebration. It usually consists of strips of raw fish, mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces. Each of the ingredient that use for making this dish has its own meaning for example the meaning of raw fish is abundance through the year, carrot is for blessing, green radish for eternal youth, peanut is symbolizing a household filled with gold and silver and the most important ingredient is plum sauces which is the meaning of it is “may life always be sweet “. this dish is usually serving as an appetizer and it is also symbolism of good luck, therefore we can see this dish when Chinese is celebrating their new year.

This pattern is inspired by yuu sahng and how I came out with this motif is by geometricize the shape that have inside this dish. So, the semicircle that have at the left of the corner is represent for the raw fish that put on the center of the plate and the triangle that have around the semicircle is represent for vegetable that arrange around the raw fish. Next, a different size of square is represent for many types of vegetable that have inside this dish and the reason I arranged the square to be overlapping on each other is to show the condition of the vegetable is overlap with each other on the plate.

For this motif I use datum as my principle, we can see that the triangle shape is tie together with the semicircle and the square is using the axis line that appear between the shape. To get this pattern, I flipped my pattern into many ways so that It can form a unique, complex and harmony pattern. As I flipped my motif into many ways it creates the movement of the motif and form an illusion.

Next, the colour scheme that I choose for this pattern is inspire by a painting from Monet which is “water lillies”.Blue , green and cream is the most colour that Monet use for this painting and that is why I decided this three colour for this pattern so that I can emphasize the colour that Monet use. The combination of light and dark colour make this pattern look balance in terms of colour scheme.

Batik in Malaysia usually use a flower, leaf, or butterfly as their motif but with this new inspiration, I hope it can create a more unique pattern so that our batik in Malaysia did not easily be wasted because, people nowadays tend to forget our traditional batik and I hope with this new inspiration it can also give an opportunity for the younger designer to came out with their creativity so that our traditional batik can be known all over the world and bring our traditional batik to another level. I hope this kind of innovation can give a lot of impact for our batik industries .
