RED RICE PATTERN

Rice is a must to have in every meal especially Asian people. The first thing that came through my mind when I heard red rice is “rice for diet”. It is rices for the diet and it is not something that is weird to eat on the normal day. People usually said “today is my cheating day. I can eat as many as I can and eat the white rice” but Orang Iban actually eat red rice on their daily day. Red rice is normally eaten in every Orang Iban’s festival like Gawai Festival. Red rice is one of the main dishes that Orang Iban usually has on the special day.

How did I represent red rice to a pattern? First, I get to know my subject, their color and shape, which is rice. The material itself shows the detail in every single little shape that rice has and the motion that the rice creates shows some shape that I can apply on my pattern. From the idea of the material and their original shape I created this pattern to show how grateful I am to see something that others do not see when they look at the rice.

The principle that I use for this pattern is rhythm and symmetry. My pattern has a lot of repetition and it creates balanced proportions. The shape that I have in my pattern is oval which represents the motion of red rice since the rice grains shape are same but in different sizes, so I used the method to see what shape the red rice made when we put it on the plate.

Next, diamond, triangle and square shapes that represent banana leaf. The color scheme that I used is white, grey, and black. The reason I choose these colors is because I have chosen the art movement that I want to represent for my food. The art movement that I choose is optical art. Optical art is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. Op art works are abstract, with many better-known pieces created in black and white. Typically, they give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or of swelling or warping. Since red rice shows some flow when we look at it carefully, I used an optical art color scheme and method to apply it to my pattern.

So, from my pattern I want people to recognize the original rice that is hardly geometrized can create such a motion and get to know the art movement that I choose so when they look at the example of something similar, they can guess what art movement it is. I also want people to know the story behind my pattern, the greatness of the power of Allah created every grain of rice and gave me the opportunity to appreciate every weave, the form found in rice and the efforts of people to produce rice for others to eat it. No human being can match the power of God our one and only creator.
