This project showcases my final Batik design named “Old times”. Why Old times? Every individual will have their own memories of when they are younger, something unforgettable. The nostalgic feeling or memories that comes to mind when he/she recognizes something familiar. A simple Batik design that can allow millennials to recall the younger version of themselves fused with inspiration from our modern world. As for me, I choose to collaborate the reminiscence of my memories in my hometown when I was younger and designed a batik which is very meaningful to me.

I once lived in George town, Penang; My hometown. For this project, I was reminded of my first look of the Batik cloth when I peek through the windows of my house. I saw my neighbours walk by my house everyday wearing Batik on the way home from the market, I was reminded of this memory. Therefore, the memories of mine gave me the idea of mixing memories and the requirements from this competition which was architectural elements.

The Architecture elements used in this Batik design was windows. The design element and principle is shapes and unity. The composition of the planes/shape creates seamless patterns that imitates older design of windows.

In my opinion, millennials loves new ideas and they also appreciates old tradition. Hence, the concept of mixing this nostalgic elements and modern architectural elements will attract the attention of domestic and global market. I believe patterns can give off different feels to different people, it is whether what the pattern reminds them of. The fuse of modern design trends and traditional ideas is what makes something special. Getting inspiration from traditional style and modern ideas like architectures can be something outstanding, unimaginable; Original.
