Batik is a popular handicraft and is also known all over the world. Batik was first introduced in Malaysia, especially in the state of Kelantan since 1910. However, since the 15th century, humans have found the traditional method of making batik. The title "Batik" comes from Indonesia and comes from the Javanese word 'tik' which means to drop or write dots. Ambatik, on the other hand, means drawing, writing, coloring or dripping, from here the title of batik has been recognized. In the past, the community uses potatoes as a taster but now batik fabrics have been developed using modern tools. After a few years, now batik is beginning to sink into the currents of time and is no longer in question. Therefore, gahara and PAM education have collaborate to hold a competition to make batik designs for copper blocks suitable for the millennium and target architecture students to represent themselves and make this event a success and rekindle the interest of today's youth.
After delving into the history of batik and knowing that it originated in the state of Kelantan, we inspired traditional Kelantan houses as inspiration for our batik patterns.
Kelantan traditional houses have a unique and distinctive house shape. By taking some of the parts of this house, namely pemeleh, tiba layar and singgora tile, we made it one of the inspirations to produce a new batik design special for this competition. Pemeleh is a pair of boards located at both ends of the screen. Used to cover lathe or male rafters. This shape of the squeezer is curved and tapered upwards. This shape is a strong character in the architecture of houses in Kelantan, Pemeleh is said to have a shape like a carving of the stork found on local fishing boats, This stork motif symbolizes spirit, protection and safety. According to Nakula (1985) pemeleh means "decorator". Apart from the meaning of decorator, he also stated the symbolism of the cutter such as the limbs of the human body, namely the head and hands. Tiba layar if seen in its architectural model is a piece of triangular-shaped boards installed to cover both the ends of the long roof and the limas roof. Genting singgora is a tile imported from Senggora in Southern Thailand. But there are some homemade roofs that use Clay. And these parts are taken from the roof of this house.
By inspiring the above, the result of our concept is “encompass”. Generally the roof act as a protection to the person inside a structure. Roof is a part of the building envelope. Roof purpose it to protect person from the heat of the sun, rain and so on. So we came up an idea of a design that connects with the roof which is “encompass” which means surrounded by defending. according to the wishes of gahara, we produce designs that are closely related to Kelantan so that can attract their interest in the design with the concept of this traditional house of Kelantan.
