The term ‘Batik’ is an Indonesian-Malay word and means ‘drops’. Batik has come to be used as a generic term that refers to the process of dyeing fabric by making use of a resist technique- covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant substance, wax, to prevent them from absorbing colors. In one form or another, batik has worldwide popularity.
Gahara and PAM Education Committee are collaborating in organizing a design competition targeting architecture students to create batik. Designed to provide opportunities for students, especially architecture students to be part of the creative economy. Themed “Aspirana Millennia'' to allow a wide girth of what excites the younger generation has created a pattern that can amaze designers and thus attract worldwide attention about batik.
The inspiration for this batik came from the hibiscus flowers. Hibiscus shows the loyalty of the people to the government. It has many names, hibiscus rosa-Sinensis is known variously as “rose mallow,” “shoe flower,” “Queen of Tropical Flowers,” and in Malaysia, Bunga Raya. In Malay, Bunga means “flower,” and Raya refers to a “celebration.” Bunga Raya literally means “celebratory flower.”Hibiscus patterns are very much in line with the Aspirana Millennia theme. The red petals symbolize courage, and the five petals represent the Rukun Negara (National Principles). To make it more attractive, we designed it with a geometry that looks a bit more modern. The name of the batik is The Great Bloomer, ‘Great' gives the meaning of Raya, i.e. from the name of the flower itself, Hibiscus, and the 'bloomer' is from a plant that produces flowers at a specified time. The concept applied in this batik is deconstructivism. Deconstructivism is a movement of postmodern architecture that appeared in the 1980s. It gives the impression of the fragmentation of the constructed building, commonly characterized by an absence of obvious harmony, continuity, or symmetry.
In design, red is an option for batik. Red can be a powerful accent color. It can have an overwhelming effect if it’s used too much in designs, especially in its purest form. It’s a great color to use when power or passion want to be portrayed in the design. Red can be very versatile, though, with brighter versions being more energetic and darker shades being more powerful and elegant. In addition, yellow is also an option. In designs, bright yellow can lend a sense of happiness and cheerfulness. Softer yellows are commonly used as a gender-neutral color for babies (rather than blue or pink) and young children. Light yellows also give a more calm feeling of happiness than bright yellows.
