I named my pattern as Batik roll, which is inspired by one of the Chinese traditional food and also known as mandarin roll. It is famously known as Chinese breakfasts and snacks. It also inspired by Batik. As we all know, the motives used for Batik are frequently about flora and fauna but for my pattern, I used foods as the motive.

The techniques that I used for this pattern was repetition technique, or also known as mirroring technique. There were a few design principles that I applied for this pattern and one of it is geometry principle, which I applied it for the combinations of designed shapes. As a result, the symmetrical balanced can be seen from the arrangement of shapes that forming the pattern. Next, another design principle that I used was harmony principle, which applied for the suitable colour selection. Plus, the wavy lines from the pattern was the application of rhythm and movement principle. As we can see, in every shape, there is no shape with straight line. All of the shapes used curved or wavy lines.

Apart from that, there was also an artistic elements that I used which was application of contrasting colours such as red and gold, which can be seen the that use of colours interspersed with different colours in every shape. Besides that, the application of illusion shape at the centre of the pattern. It is because the pattern is in 2-Dimension which we could only see one side as it is not a 3-Dimension which is a concrete shape. Lastly, for the artistic element that I used was visible braid which could only be seen but the surfaces can not be felt. We can see the surfaces solely from the pattern.

For the colour scheme, the colours that I used were based on art movement that I chose which is art deco elements. The colours are red in code fire brick, Indian red, and gold. The selection of these colours are because as we all know, red colour is very familiar with Chinese culture because they believe that red colour brings luck. As for another two colours, I chose Indian red because it still in the same group of red colour but in different shade. Lastly, gold resembles wealthy.

The pattern shows the processes of making the mandarin roll. From the beginning, it started from the dough being kneaded, chopped, and mixed with some vegetables, and lastly the steaming process. Besides that, the pattern also shows the texture of the mandarin roll which is puffed, bouncy and feathery light.

From this pattern, I want to bring out the hidden gem to public as not everyone know about the existence of this Chinese traditional food in Malaysia. I hope other people would explore more about the cultures in our country and appreciate it such as the hardships of making traditional food like mandarin roll. Lastly, we should appreciate all of the hardships that our ancestors went through to get us where we are now.
